Dr. Bongiovanni has an undergraduate degree from Smith College; MD from Case Western University; internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital; fellowship in gastroenterology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Served as Director of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at University of Cincinnati. Serves on the medical staffs of Jewish Hospital and Christ Hospital and holds privileges at Bethesda Hospital, Clermont Mercy Hospital, Mercy Anderson Hospital, and Children's Hospital.

This is the most useful medical Spanish book ever written.

If you are worried that a Spanish-speaking patient will talk too fast and say too much for you to understand, your worries are over. Medical Spanish by Bongiovanni is designed to elicit yes-no answers or short answers. Other chapters teach simple commands for conducting exams, instructing therapy or providing discharge information. It's a gift from heaven. You will develop confidence as you learn Spanish.

Excellent resource for practitioners

As a family nurse practitioner student, this book is very useful to learn medical terminology. The questions are short answers and I especially like the patient education materials, birth control methods, how to breast feed, prescription instructions and there's lots more. It instructs you on how to obtain an informed consent and HIPPA. I love that I can carry it around in my labcoat!

Okay, but could be better...

"Medical Spanish" will be a good start for someone with a few classes of conversational Spanish under their belt, in other words, someone with a previous grasp of pronunciation. The book offers a very brief guide to pronunciation, but unlike most Spanish phrase books, words are not broken down or spelled phonetically to aid the English speaker in correct pronunciation. Knowing vocabulary and phrases won't help you one bit if you can't pronounce them.
I realize that this one book cannot cover the entire scope of healthcare, but as a nursing student, I was disappointed that it lacked so many phrases that would be relevant to a nurse or nursing assistant, who are the primary caregivers of patients in every healthcare setting. The book was more geared toward doctors. I also expected to see an extensive vocabulary list of body parts, as well as ADLs, and hygiene tasks relevant to the healthcare setting. Also surprising was the fact that the book made no mention of cultural norms that a healthcare provider would need to know. I am sure that the purpose of these omissions was to keep the book small enough so that it would still be portable, rather than a bulky textbook. I guess I can appreciate that, but I was still disappointed nonetheless.
I will definitely be able to use this book to an extent, but I will have to use it in conjunction with other books in order build the Spanish vocabulary that a nurse would need.
