    Marta McDowell teaches at the New York Botanical Gardens. A frequent lecturer at local garden clubs and arboretums, including the Horticultural Society of New York and the Chautauqua Institution, her gardening articles have been published in the New York Times and Woman's Day.

    A Celebration Indeed!

    The wonder of this book is that the author has done a fabulous job of conmbining biography, poetry and gardening into one terrific volume.

    The descriptions of Dickinson's life are intimate and homey; reading it, you feel like you're spending a few hours with a friend.

    And McDowell does a great job of helping us understand the role that gardening played in both Emily's life and her poetry by providing a lot of specific details that bring Emily and her home to life.

    As a gardener myself, I was extremely impressed with McDowell's gardening knowledge. She's included a number of tips and techniques that will be useful to both novice and experienced gardeners.

    Bottom line: this is just a wonderful book, and one that I'll be giving to many of my poetry and gardening friends.

    A Charming Gardening Companion

    Ms. McDowell is a delightful writer. Her book on Emily Dickinson's Gardens kept me reassuring company this spring as I worried my way through my first seed growing experiments. I kept it next to my seed growing trays by my computer where I sat and worked everyday. Her conversational style was reassuring, informative and entertaining. Somehow her book managed to say the right thing at the moment when I needed to read it.

    I could not put this book down. I felt like I was there in the garden. I also liked the fact that there are resource pages in the book. And, I learned many a good tip. Great read.

    A teacher's review - Great supplement for most students

    This is neat! Do not mistake it for a text or curriculum to actually learn the Spanish language. However, as a supplement, it is a really neat way to increase your vocabulary, as well as learn idioms, phrases, and countless ways to express yourself. My Spanish 2 students enjoyed passing this around in class while they were working on a recent story project. To describe characters, or yourself, this is a GREAT resource.

    However, even my Spanish 2 students were a little hesitant with pronunciation, and I do wish that more books would include phonetic pronunciation - just to enhance the reader's confidence in using the phrases.

    The book includes topics via an OPPOSITES section - so you can describe two opposite feelings on pages that face one another. Very handy! The other section is for personality types. Both sections contain synonyms and phrases that are helpful and interesting and definitely NOT found in the average Spanish text.

    There is also an index, but no exhaustive glossary at all, which would be nice for my students.
    I would say the age range for this book would be 12 year olds and up. The pictures are really nice additions that made us all laugh out loud at times.

    I recommend this book for Spanish I and II students (or self-study) for a fresh look at ways to express yourself and use your language effectively. I'm happy to have it in my library!

    Indispensable for colloquial expertise in Spanish

    Of all the many books published in the last few years promising to improve your expertise in speaking Spanish, this is by far one of the best that I have seen. Not only is it fun and wonderfully illustrated with both drawings and colorful phrases, but it certainly surpasses what it claims to do: "to match 1,001 smiles, frowns, and gestures to Spanish expressions" to learn the language. Divided into three general sections: Character and Personality; Moods, Emotions, and Attitudes; and Appearance and Gestures, the amount and types of vocabulary and model sentences given are simply varied, useful, thorough, and practical for improving one's informal spoken skills in this growingly important language. Geared for those beyond the high school level, this book will provide you with hundreds of hours of fun in learning and mastering a huge number of everyday vocabulary and commonly used phrases for use in informal, social situations. Extremely indispensable.

    Fun Book for the Kindle DX

    Some of the text is fuzzy and hard to read in low light. With that being said, I like this book for it's unique way of presenting colloquial phrases of interpersonal expressions. I like that it also gives literal definitions of the Spanish phrases. This book presents a lot of information that I have not seen in other computer software or language learning books for Spanish. It is a fun supplement to learning!

    Like an espresso shot of engineering knowledge

    Marks' is legend among reference handbooks for engineering and for good reason, the book combines excellent commentary from industry and academic experts with plenty of formulas, tables and diagrams. It lists the references for each section right at the beginning along with the authors which is convenient if you want to dig deeper into the knowledge area.

    Mechanical Engineering is a very wide area and while you study many topics in school, unless you actively use them professionally your knowledge gets fuzzy. For this reason having a handbook like this one is a great way to refresh your memory or learn about topics you haven't spent much time with before going on to more specific books on the topic. I still find it amazing how much information is squeezed into each section and readers will see that the knowledge density is staggering.

    It is because of Marks' section on Welding that I learned about, and subsequently purchased, the excellent books on Welded Structures and Weldment Design from Lincoln Electric written by Omer Blodgett. I would have never run across these books in a store and despite being written in the 1960s, and mentioning slide rules, they contain a wealth of practical knowledge about welded steel structures still relevant today. You just can do the calculations on a computer and skip the nomograms these days, though I still like the nomograms ability to build your intuition of how a result will end up.

    I can be confident from following that chain of references that other areas of Marks' would lead to similar quality references should I need them, and that is why this handbook is worth its weight in gold.

    Handy Reference Manual

    Unlike some of the reviewers, I have not had buyer's remorse (yet). I don't use Mark's Handbook a lot, but it has been providing the answers to my questions when I've looked for them. Good index. I would also recommend you take a look at the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, by Mike Lindeburg.

    Pretty Much Amazing!!!

    This book is concise and exactly what you want if you really want to study pharmacology. It is an "edited" version of the 45 pound, full-size book, but I haven't felt like I was missing out on material. I can carry it around with me to class and back home, which means that I actually use it. It includes all the important diagrams and tables that you need. The only problem I have come across is needing to find a specific reading assignment based on page numbers (I can figure it out using the chapters though). But it is cheaper, which always matters!

    Well there are a lot of things I like about this book, maybe I may not be able to tell you everything, it has all the necesary information you may need. Its size is bigger than a copybook, so you can take it anywhere in your backpack and use it whenever you need it. The information is very complete so you never have to check out other book again. I recommend this book to all of you students and professionals. Check it by yourselves.

    This is agreat addition to anyones practice/pharm class. I have used it daily- good review of the phisology. I keep it in my backpack I have both this manual & the 11th edition of the large Text but I haven't opened that one since this smaller one arrived.

    Review from a Captain

    This book is the best of its kind and should come with every boat. I am a licensed master captain with decades of experience running and repairing boats. I also run an offshore fishing and diving charter boat (ORION - Out to Sea Adventures - Port Aransas, TX). Unfortunately, if it can break on a boat I have had to fix it. I also rebuilt several boats from the hull up. There are other good books out there and some may go into more detail on certain topics but if you do not own and read this book first you are doing yourself a disservice. I also am a consultant to many vessel owners and have sent this book to them as a reference. It has saved many of them thousands of dollars. Even if you are not doing the work yourself this book can really help you understand what you are talking about when you hire someone and inspect their work.

    I would reccomend this book to anyone who isn't afraid to take on tough jobs on their boat and wants to fully understand how everything works. I would tackle nearly anything with this in my galley library. I intend to purchase more of these as gifts for friends.

    Very detailed

    At least half this book is exactly the same as First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship, but it does a good job of describing pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and surgical management of issues. It's helpful that it includes chapters on the various surgical subspecialties.

    I wouldn't say that it is particularly high yield because it's over 500 pages. It would be the most helpful to someone who hasn't already had their medicine clerkship.

    Pretty good book..

    The book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
    1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
    2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series. (The "Recall" series has its hits and misses, but Surgical Recall is a must-have book for the surgery rotation. Really. It goes very well with First Aid or the similar "Blueprints.")
    3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.
    Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes."

    ace the shelf and ward pimping

    What I love about this text is the comprehensiveness. It has something for all the surg specialties and does a pretty decent job at capturing the most important information. It's full of eponymous that will impress your residents/attendings and facts that will help you on the shelf. I was able to get through the entire text and do the uworld surg questions and ended up with a 97 on the shelf. This is the ideal resource for outline learners. If you thrive on vignettes then look elsewhere. I can't stand case files.

    The only info it lacks is peds ortho, which is actually very high yield on the shelf. The fluids/electrolytes/nutrition section is on the weak side. The trauma chapter could use improvement as well. The appendix chapter lacks the Alvarado scoring system.

With degrees in electroacoustic music and music composition from Princeton and Dartmouth, he currently teaches at the University of Miami, Florida, as an Assistant Professor of Music Engineering.     DAW Book

    This is an informative book about audio basics and audio workstations. It help me, a first time user of audio and midi recording better understand the subject. I still have to master the technical details of cubase (DAW) and the hardware I have that connects all the audio signals together in the computer (Lexicon Lambda). I recommecd this book for those "in the dark", like I was.

    Textbook

    Some one in a previous review listed this as a textbook, well it really is and I have found it very helpful. The history behind the development of a technology helps me to understand the reason behind the development and a appreciation of the technology at hand and at the present time. Nothing just happens. It evolves and keeps on until it theoretically becomes refined to the max.(and lots of times it leads to a new invention) This is a fairly good book. I think it will give enough information to get you to walking and to begin to understand the terms and what they entail. Now I understand on my interface, what the sample rate is, and the meaning of compression. This isnt everything but it gives the fundamentals.

    Good book, not comprehensive

    The book was very detailed, but not very comprehensive. There was a lot of facts, but they were not really helpful for organizing myself to prepare for working in an actual ED. It was more like a good quick reference source for the basics.I would recommend for general knowledge, but not for detail, or for a main source.
