My previous sleep book, and the predecessor to this one, is The No-Cry Sleep Solution. It provides answers to better sleep for  children from the day of birth through toddlerhood. My youngest  child was a very frequent night-waking, all-night breastfeeding-baby. My experience learning how to help him sleep all night was the incentive for me to write my first no-cry sleep book. Since then, I have corresponded with tens of  thousands of parents, and I have expanded my research up through the preschool years to bring you this edition of The No-Cry Sleep Solution.

Because the magic of children is that they are all very different from one another, and that they are unique in their transitions from one stage of growth to the next, this edition of The No-Cry Sleep Solution crosses paths with the first for that in-between stage from baby to toddler. A lot of suggestions

I have a 14 month who is considered a toddler at that age. I thought the book would address her, but she doesn't fit into too many of the suggestions yet because she can't talk and is still learning a lot. I did like that the book offered a lot of suggestions, which I did not realize suggestions would be the answer. I was expecting a plan, but the suggestions so you can tailor your own plan actually makes sense. I was looking for an easy answer like a dope!

Got for my daughter to read for my grandchild. She tried some of the methods and not sure how well they work for all children, but it depends on the child and why they cry when you try to leave them when putting to bed.

An Outstanding Resource for Tired Parents Everywhere!

Elizabeth Pantley has done it again! This is a truly outstanding book just PACKED with great ideas on how to get your toddler or preschooler to sleep well!

The author goes over what healthy toddler and preschooler sleep should be [for those of us who've never seen it yet in our children and have no clue what that looks like! :) ] She then gives detailed and very helpful instructions to parents on how to create a sleep plan to make improvements in the child's sleep situation. She goes over some basic "common sense" rules [which weren't so common sense to me since I wasn't doing half of them before I read this book!]. Then the second half of the book is devoted to in depth discussion of different specific sleep problems [ie: night terrors, "I'm not tired", etc] and ideas for overcoming these problems. The very end of the book includes a section on how to recognize actual sleep disorders and what to do if you child has one.

This book is a literal treasury of ideas - some of which are certain to be helpful! As always, Pantley does a great job balancing the needs of the child with the needs of the parent. She succeeds in helping both get the sleep they need in a gentle and loving way.

I highly recommend this book for any parent of a child who does not sleep well.

Thorough yet concise reference for thoracic surgery. Being a general surgeon who does some thoracic it is a great resource. I purchased to kindle reader and very useful to have portable on phone and iPad, unfortunately the hospital uses PC's and cannot download reader there.

About the Author
Frederick Bloetscher, Ph.D., is President of Public Utility Management and Planning Services, Inc. (PUMPS), and Applied Science and Research, Inc. PUMPS is a consulting firm dedicated to evaluation of utility systems, needs assessments, condition assessments, strategic planning, capital improvement planning, grant and loan acquisition, interlocal agreement recommendations, bond document preparation, consultant coordination, and permitting and implementation of capital improvement construction. Applied Science and Research, Inc., is dedicated to research issues associated with groundwater injection, risk, and water quality. Dr. Bloetscher is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Miami Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering in Coral Gables, Florida. He is the past Chair for the American Water Works Association Groundwater Committee, and its Aquifer Storage and Recovery subcommittee, and is a current Water Resource Division Trustee. He lives in Dania Beach, Florida.

Albert Muniz is a Vice President with Hazen and Sawyer, P.C., and manager of their Boca Raton office. Hazen and Sawyer is one of the top environmental engineering firms in the Western Hemisphere, working in water resources, water treatment, wastewater treatment, and injection programs. Mr. Muniz has over 24 years' experience with injection well programs, including water supply and disposal injection programs. He is Vice Chair of the AWWA Groundwater Committee, and serves on its Aquifer Storage and Recovery Subcommittee. He lives in Coconut Creek, Florida.

Gerhardt M. Witt is President and Principal Hydrogeologist for Gerhardt M. Witt and Associates, Inc. (GMW&A), a consulting firm dedicated to hydrogeologic enterprises. GMW&A designs and supervises the installation, repair, and rehabilitation of both freshwater and saltwater supply wells, injection wells for disposal of concentrate from membrane systems, groundwater remediation, wastewater, storm water, oilfield, and golf course applications. Mr. Witt has over 20 years experience with all types of water supply and injection well applications in the United States, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. He lives in Boynton Beach, Florida.

The mysteries of the sea

Covers an impressive breadth of maritime lore, fact and fiction. This book will inform a reader on different types of sailing ships and associated terminology, gives a well-researched primer on the mythology and literature of the sea, and explains why mariners thought the things they thought. The writing style is neither credulous nor dismissive, and gives no particular favor or credence to any view - a small thing but a welcome one for the topic, as it allows the reader to immerse themselves in the mood and mindset of the tales.

If you find the sea and the age of sail fascinating, this book will likely delight you.

fascinating cornucopia

This book is absolutely fascinating if you're at all interested in - well, in seafaring lore & legend. I found the writing style not dry at all, but very warm and affable. It's in some ways 'academic' - that is, written intelligently and carefully, not sloppily - but there was also definite personality in it. I would love to have a drink with this guy - he'd be funny and incredibly interesting.
Importantly, the writer has a clear love and passion for what he's writing about, and that gets you into it.
The layout was also very clear and practical - easy to find the information you're looking for.

This would be a great factual resource for writers, especially historical or fantasy writers.

This book serves relatively little purpose

If you've ever read Bill O'Neil's "How to Make Money in Stocks" you've already been exposed to every single bit of information in this book. There really is nothing new, sadly--in fact, this book is more or less just a condensed version of the earlier book, with a few things updated. Since O'Neil claims his method has worked for 50 years and will continue to work forever, though, there really was no need to update.

On the other hand, this book was a decent refresher course for me. Repetition is good, though you could acheive the same result from reading "How to Make Money in Stocks" again. Like that book, this one is more or less a plug for IBD--it explains the premise behind the IBD way of investing but tells you over and over that you won't be able to apply O'Neil's precepts without a subscription to the site or the paper. It's also tiresome that O'Neil thinks his is the ONLY method of investing that works (he even insists that, when choosing a broker, you find one that has attended IBD's paid workshops and subscribes to their paper).

To really understand the IBD philosophy you must read one of his books. I see no reason why it should be this one, though, and can't help think this recycled material was just brought to market in order to capitalize on the success of the first book. I really like the IBD way of investing, and use it often, but I would recommend "How to Make Money in Stocks" over this book any day. In fact, if you have that book you don't even need this one.

Good book but 1 star below "How to make money....."

I'm a professional investor who has studied every conceivable investment theory imaginable. I use my own research and invest 10% of my portfolio in each position up to a maximum of 10 positions and a minimum of 0 positions (100% cash at times). I do extensive research every January and narrow the field of stocks to 100 - 150 companies. I value them using EPS estimates from I/B/E/S, Book Value Growth, Cash Flow Growth, EPS Growth, ROE, debt, etc (basic Buffett stuff). From this, I set my target buy point and wait. I look to buy stable companies at bargain prices before they resume their upward trend. When one of the 100-150 companies hits my chosen buy price I reexamine EPS estimates, technical, and sentiment data and then invest 10% of my portfolio in the company (must have guts here and EPS estimates help tremendously). I have averaged over 50%/year since 1998 with an average of 52% in money market the entire time. My worst year was 2001 at +41% (had over 60% in cash that year). I'm considering writing a book about my methods if there is enough interest. The point I'm trying to make is that you ABSOLUTELY need to AUTOMATE your investment strategy. Without a doubt, O'Neil can do this for you. For proof, goto [...] and look in the stock screen section. He is up 700% since Jan 1998. O'Neil has a great system of investing and I think it will work well for those who diligently apply his techniques. I would take it one step further though and apply EPS estimate revision data in addition to the quarterly reported EPS growth hurdles he outlines in the book (for EPS estimates goto Zacks.com, Multex.com, Yahoo finance and look for estimate trends).

I agree--read this book along with IBD -Be wary.........

I have to agree with the previous reviewer who said that all you really need is IBD along with this book. By contrast, I found the review by an obvious book peddler indicating that he has "averaged 50% gains per year" and "is considering writing a book if there is enough interest" laughable.
Where do you suppose this guy is going to get his information? That's right. From O'Niels book and IBD! You can do the same yourself.
Be wary of certain reviewers who are trying to peddle books. On the other hand, I highly recommend O'Niels books and IBD.

Hands on clinically oriented and procedural

Hands on clinically oriented and procedural as well as proactive and situational...a must read and great read (and not very difficult read) for those who like to be informed, proactive, proactively informed and well prepared for any birthing or gynecological situation. However, keep your pathology book handy...because pathology is your basis for possible permutations in the best world and worst possible worlds of permutation and Lange is application and clinical. I would definitely accompany this text with Medical Embryology by TW Sadler which gives you all the essential vocabulary words with pictorials and sets the foundation for the embryology section of this book. I would also purchase What to Expect When You ARE Expecting...this one as a source of reference and hobby reading...we still need to know what mothers and teenage nongestational mothers read out there and be as informed as mothers can and should be. The use of technology is over-rated...for example ultrasound, genetics/kariotyping is also under valued and well teratogens as a cause for abortions well also lacking. However, we do have genetics as a separate course and embryology too...and pathology and physiology.

LexiComp has a phone app that updates regularly. Unfortunately, I can't get reception at most clinics. This book is well written. Medications are listed alphabetically with brand names, uses, unlabeled uses, drug class, interactions, dosage calculations, dose adjustments for children/renal/hepatic/elderly, dosage forms available. It even has pronounciations (soo doe e FEN rin)for those of us who tend to trip over words.

Must have for board prep

This is the only book I found that attempts to provide answers to an actual ABA exam -- good for practice testing. The authors seem to do their best to tackle some of the controversial questions.

A GREAT BOOK

I have just received my passing score for the written boards and this was a book I went over twice before the real test. It is GREAT!!! I have been recommending it to everyone studying for the boards. The more questions one can do before the exam, the better, and the resources are slim when it comes to questions that have full explanations of correct AND incorrect answers. This book is necessary to succeed, in my opinion.

Reasonable tool

This book appears quite reasonable to use as a study aid. Like most reviewers commented; there is no answer key from the board. Thus, the authors seem to (much like me) scratched their heads over quite a few questions without a true correct answer. The major draw for me was REAL board questions (many are outdated, but many concepts remain pertinent)with a brief summary of their reasoning and why each answer was correct or incorrect. Do not use it as your only tool, but part of a well rounded approach to the terror of the ABA board exam.

Simply.... WOW

**note, amazon sometimes recycles user reviews to other editions of a book. This review is intended for the newer edition with the red fan on the front-- but I have seen it posted on an older edition that is black with several small pictures of japan on the cover like mt. fuji, sushi, etc. I have never seen or used this book. It might be ok, or it might not--thats why i DIDNT review it**

I ordered some new books to help teach my visiting mom japanese, and preview texts for the beginners Japanese courses I am planning and this one stood out as a must have for students of Japanese. Especially Students who are working on their own.

I do not recomend this book to an absolute beginner who has no native speaker/or experienced learner to consult because while the book does start with the basics, it moves a little quickly.

What sets this book apart is that it uses both a dialouge/contextual format to put the target vocab/structures in a natural context, and a standard grammatical annalysis where you learn how to change the various parts of a sentence pattern to manipulate meaning in an academic way.

I like both the Berlitz Essentials Book, and the Hugo's Japanese in 3 months--

Berlitz while using dialouges that sound semi-natural and rather creative review activities, by the end of the book the student can express things in the past/pres/future and hypothetical but is not grammitacally equipped to understand all the other shades of meaning that japanese has that don't fit so nicely into english categories of expression that japanese speakers just use naturally.-- basically japanse people will understand you just fine, but you might not be able to understand them.

Hugo on the other hand has some good grammar, but it's useage and word choice can at times be too formal, or stilted. While near the end there is a small section on natural useage and abbreviated forms, they are for the most part ignored so that the new grammar patterns can be discussed clearly without digressing into all the possible forms one thought could take depending on whether it is a man/woman at work or with friends talking carefully, or very casually. It can be a very hard book to work through if you are not motivated to study grammar, even though it is a gem because it has no interesting characters to follow (Mr. Brown has no personality).

Teach yourself on the otherhand presents the most natural Japanese I have come across in any textbook. My friends and wife actually sound like this. It utilizes the device of following a circle of people who are different ages/social status so that a wide range of politeness levels can be demonstrated in believable situations. Also, these characters aren't perfect, they don't always say nice things, or like everything. The sister/brother dialouge at the end of the book is so funny because the she cons the bro into cleaning the house, and you get to hear him rant about how horrible a person his sister is.

Another point is, it clearly points out how in daily conversation certain forms are rarely used like they are in a textbook but are expressed in other ways. This is important because it trains the listener to hearing these alternative forms, and prepares them for discussions with real native speakers. It also uses some slang-ish vocabulary that is often not mentioned in textbooks like dekai, alongside its more well known alternative Okii. It teaches both, not just one or the other, which is the best way.

There is even a short segment on how to form/identify some basic insults. Nothing gratuitous, or out of proportion. But it was refreshing to see in a book.

And importantly, the excercises in the book are actually interesting. they have you role play interesting scenarios like you are a lazy student, and explain to your mom how you got/made others do your errands/chores for you by using the appropriate verb forms. --I loved the question where the mom asks you if you bought her cigarettes yet, and you are told to say that you made your little brother go and get them.... the little touches of humor make the book fun to work through.

As to possible criticisms, yes this book moves a little quickly because it introduces several new grammar points at once, and then discusses them afterwards, but a new student should work through something else first, or find a native speaker to help them work through it.-- if they expect to learn Japanese with only one book, their expectations need to be adjusted.

two- this book only has about 20-30@kanji in it, and they are mostly used for art. This book is about conversational Japanese. You can learn some complex grammar here, but don't look for reading practice-- you will be dissapointed. If Kanji is that important to you-- transfer the dialouges and example sentences in to Kanji-- its a great chance to practice.

-- as for the cd version. Good, but basic. It goes through the dialouges with native pronunciation, though I think at a little less than normal speed. The best part is that at the end of each chapters track-- there is a little Pimsleur-esque review section where you are asked to take part in a role play by responding to questions based on certain audio prompts, or answer questions in the positive/negative and conjugate verbs into differnt forms. Honestly, I wish there were more of these types of questions on the CDs, but they are good. And at 20 dollars for the set vs 900 for pimsleur, its a good deal.

The only student who may not want this book is someone planning on living in the kansai area, where the spoken japanese is pretty different from that here in the Tokyo area. the language in this book is so Natural to the tokyo area (not just standard japanese which is based on the tokyo dialect) but actually employs contractions, vocabulary, and grammatical variations that would mark you as being from the Kantou area. But, it would really have to be important to you, otherwise... buy this book already!!!!

It's ok for reference

This was the first Japanese book I obtained. I started working through it, but the learning curve is quite steep.

Eventually I discarded it in favour of classes using Shin no Nihongo and Japanese for Busy People. Both of these are good, and give a lot more exercises than this book, and use hiragana as opposed to romaji.

However, the dialogues in this book are good. Moreover the grammar sections give what I consider good explanations, although if you get a grammar book as I later did, you'll find them a bit limited.

Bottom line: it is a good reference book and quite cheap.

Just not what it was hyped to be

I bought this expecting the dialogue to go hand in hand with the book(I need to see and hear what Im learning) and it doesnt. The dialogue on the CD jumps around and then suddenly goes to the next chpater, meanwhile youre left with an entire chapter that youre not quite sure what to do with. Maybe if I had plenty of time to try to sort this book out Id be ok, but I would like to learn Japanese-not learn how to understand and read a book that supposedly is going to eventually teach me something.
