breaking old habits

Though I've been a masters swimmer for a few years, this book and it's drills were helpful. By going through the prescribed program, week by week, the freestyle concepts of rotation, breathing on both sides,and stretching, start to replace old habits. I agree, it's important to drop back and work on technique, rather than reinforce poor body mechanics while keeping up in your lane. The freestyle and breaststroke chapters were the most helpful to me.

There is not a lot to say about this book. It covers the basics, and more details on freestyle. There are some good hints/tips, but not very deep. Still a good book to read.

The book doesn't refine technique. It is good for beginners. For people who can swim very well I would not recommend this book.

Don't waste your time

I am a pediatric subspecialist who just recertified in general pediatrics. This was the first book I used and it was a real waste of time. I have my doubts about the accuracy of the information, but even assuming the information was accurate, the types of questions seemed largely unlike the exam itself.

Much more than I expected.

I've never read any of the dozen or so books in the "Mighty Manager" series, but if HOW TO BE A GREAT COACH by Marshall Cook is any indication of this series, I will certainly pick up a few others. I was very pleased with this little easy to read book. It's only 100 pages, but the principles it covers are well laid out, brief and very applicable.

I can certainly see the great value in this book for new team leaders just starting out, or seasoned team leaders that are not having the level of success they are looking for. When your team isn't performing well, it's usually not the teams fault, at least not entirely. This book will help struggling team leaders (or coaches) see where they might be on the wrong path of building and leading a strong team and inspiring employees to reach maximum productivity.

Each of the 24 lessons covered are only 2 or 3 pages in length, so this is very easily digestible even for those who don't appreciate the value of reading or that have the tenacity to stick with it. What I mean is, even non-readers will be able to get through this and will benefit greatly if they will apply its principles.

The essence of the book is really summarized in the very first paragraph of the first lesson. "Your job isn't to correct mistakes, find fault, or assess blame. Your job is to achieve productivity goals by coaching your staff to peak performance." After just reading those two sentences, dozens of "managers" come to mind that would benefit greatly from this little book. I'm sure you know a few as well. This coaching theory is further bolstered by the quote on page 51 - "The better the manager you are, the less control you need over your workers".

Many managers feel it is necessary to berate employees into submission. As explained in the chapter on controlling your anger, once employees learn that you can't control your anger, they will tiptoe in your presence, working to avoid making mistakes and evade blame, rather than working to solve problems and produce results.

This little book delivered far more than I ever expected. I would highly recommend this book, particularly to new team leaders or team leaders that are not getting the desired results.

Great little dictionary

I am old (I remember when the dinosaurs walked the earth and dirt was new!) and I am taking a spanish class. My instructor suggested that we find one of these 'first' dictionaries to use as well as a regular spanish/english dictionary. I am very pleased with this one. I like the way the words are grouped and that the verbs are sub grouped together. Once I don't need it any more, I'll probably pass it on to my grandkids! But I do recommend this, even to adults who are new to the spanish language, it's a great dictionary and I use it a lot.

McGraw Hill's Spanish Picture Dictionary

I purchased several of these to use in a weekly Spanish class that I teach to 3rd-6th graders. My decision was heavily influenced by the fact that the dictionaries have the phonetic pronunciation included for each word. Curiously, most childrens dictionaries omit this very important feature. Unless you are fluent in Spanish, you/your child will need help with correct pronunciation. Otherwise you will find yourselves saying jab-on instead of ha-BON for soap and pronouncing amarillo (yellow) like the city in Texas instead of correctly saying a-ma-REE-yo. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that one must flip to the back of the book to find the pronunciation. The book would be much easier to use if each word had the phonetic pronunciation on the same page instead of in the back. With well over 1,000 words included, some pages are really packed, so I can understand why that might not be very practical. Also, Spanish varies slightly from country to country. Most Hispanic people that I am likely to encounter are from Mexico. There are a few definitions that are not Mexican Spanish. I can live with that, though. Overall, this is a very good product for a very good price.

A fine compliment for the study of Spanish.

The only problem I have here is with the need to constantly be flipping back and forth in the book so as to see the proper pronunication guide for words.

Having said that, it's still a really good book for the building up of a good basic vocabulary of Spanish.

About the Author
Erik Schlimmer is the author of Thru Hiker's Guide to America (2005), Blue Line to Blue Line (2013), History Inside the Blue Line (2014), and My Adirondacks (2015). He has also written for national periodicals including Canoe and Kayak, Mountain Biking Magazine, and National Geographic Adventure. As a former educator for the State University of New York, Erik is three-time recipient of this university system's Merit Award for Teaching and their Outstanding Instructor of the Year Award. An accomplished adventurer, he has hiked more than 10,000 miles, climbed nearly 2,000 peaks, and slept outside more than 1,000 nights.

Aimed at novice to intermediate backpackers. Not a bad place to start looking for a trail. Includes some less famous trails (ie less than AP, PCT, etc.)

Not Just A Guidebook -- Great for Armchiar Hiking

I would imagine that this book would be considered a reference, but I read it cover to cover. Mr. Schlimmer does a great job of putting you on the trail, and sprinkles his prose with just enough humor to make it fun. Unfortunately, he also sprinkles his prose with a little too much politics for my taste, but I still greatly enjoyed the book. I'm also unsympathetic with the reader who was expecting more about the AT. The book cover explains clearly what trails are included, and the author gives a good justification for his choices in the introduction -- which, by the way, is pretty darned good as well.

Think outside the Appalachian Trail

The only bad part about this book is that it didn't come out years ago. Really. Hands down, the definitive guide to long-distance hiking in the United States.

I usually don't write reviews but after reading the dissenting view ("misleading title") I had to even the score. Schlimmer knows about the AT- he's a well accomplished long-distance hiker (like myself) and former AT caretaker and ridgerunner (a dream job). He chose the "underdog" trails because they are NOT the Appalachian Trail. Type in "Appalachian Trail" on Amazon and see how many titles come up. I counted 293 of them. But how many books are out there on the Baker Trail, Mountains-to-Sea Trail, International Appalachian Trail, Shore-to-Shore Trail, Wonderland Trail, etc, etc? Not many. The "Thru-Hiker's Guide to America" fills the long-distance void.

With 25 trails to choose from located in more than half of the 50 states, Schlimmer's witty tone and informative style will make your backpacking wish list grow and grow. Five stars.

About the Author
Debra Cantrell is an adult educator working with the native peoples of Canada--helping them develop self-government and social institutions. A large part of her job is facilitating workshops; she also trains counselors to deal with social problems such as alcoholism and child abuse. Her husband first started talking about longterm cruising in 1987, and they chartered in the Caribbean in 1987, 1991, and 1993. They bought their boat while on charter in 1993, and have since been easing into the cruising life with two-month cruises whenever possible. They made their first major offshore passage (U.S. Virgins to the Chesapeake) in 1997. Meanwhile, in her doctoral program in Adult Education, Cantrell wrote her dissertation on women embracing the cruising lifestyle. Through the internet and sailing magazines, she met and interviewed 107 women, following some 80 of them over a five-year period of their lives. Cantrell sees a conjunction between her professional work and her interest in cruising women--in both areas she has focused on holistic wellness, health and happiness achieved through challenge and change. Floating Marriage Counselor

A little less psycho babble and a bit more logistical information would have suited me better. Ms. Cantrell spends the majority of the book being a relationship/marriage counselor, and though it's true issues become larger in smaller spaces, there are more issues for women cruisers than just their relationship dynamics. As I said, practical logistical information would have suited me better.

No Holds Barred

Because my husband and I plan to go cruising within the next couple of years, I have tried to read everything I can get my hands on concerning cruising from a woman's perspective. Most of what I've read was either written by men extolling the virtues of cruising for women, or they were scary travelogues by women about huge waves, wet bunks, and life-threatening injuries. Deb Cantrell's book tells it like it is from a wide variety of female perspectives. She shows both the good and bad about cruising from the women who have done it, some more successfully than others. Instead of being a cruising "how to", she focuses on what is to be gained, as well as what one risks losing, by taking the plunge. I am especially grateful for the section on fears, as I now know that many of the fears I have about this lifestyle change are shared by women of all ages. The author also provides valuable insights and suggestions for dealing with those fears in ways to which women can relate. But the most special aspect of this book is the fact that it draws on the experiences of women of all ages, economic circumstances, and sailing skills. The rich diversity of comments and experiences makes this a truly invaluable resource for the cruising "wannabe" and the more reluctant among us. Without belaboring the point, I can't imagine being realistically prepared to move aboard and cruise without having read and reread this book until it's tattered.

A GOOD COURSE

Ms. Cantrell's survey of 107 women , both surprised and overwhelmed me. The woman pared down their lives to spend varying lengths of time living aboard a sailboat with their partners, discovering paths and places that cannot be experienced in life on land. I bought this book for its sub-title, -A Woman's Guide to Choosing the Cruising Life. I was going to present it to my wife, as a part of my gentle persuasion, hoping it would help me to encourage her to begin to feel the excitement I feel about the prospect of spending a part of our lives together on a boat.
The next day on my way out to ride the bus to work, I grabbed it and began to read. If I had been walking while reading, I would have been stopped in my tracks. I have read a lot of magazine articles about sailing, places to sail, and places not to sail and passed some of them on to my wife with hopes that she would brush up against some of my enthusiasm.
However, Changing Course gave me a different and more robust excitement about the prospect of the two of us casting off the land and sailing, 'round a bit. As I read, I was unable to restrain my excitement and found myself constantly interrupting her to read some of the wonderful parts and passages. This concise little book will answer most questions about the fears and mysteries of cruising the oceans of the world and living a different and more rewarding life with the one you love.

I borrowed this book from the library, its very good and simple to read and understand, i highly recommend this book for anyone intrested in wanting to get into fly fishing, this book is a good book and very informative and instructive, i highly recommend it and worth every doller.

First, this book is an easy read. It is approximately 181 pages long and broken into easily digested parts. Seven of the thirteen chapters focus exclusively on each of the principles of maneuver warfare. Generally speaking, all the chapters follow a similar format. The authors will make a point and follow it up with an example from military history. They then provide an example from the commercial world. Each of these examples is followed by a brief analysis of the principle in discussion. The reader is then given a general analysis that cuts across both the military and business examples. Finally, each chapter ends with a discussion of how the Marine Corps applies and/or views this principle. The advantage of this format is that the reader knows what to expect. The book finishes with a discussion on leadership, the glue that holds the maneuver warfare principles together.

There is nothing new in this book. All of these principles can be found in other management and leadership teaching aids. This book's true value is the clear, concise, and easy format in which it is written. The true standard for good writing is the ability to clearly convey a point to the reader. This book meets that standard. It has valuable lessons for managers in all organizations, be they military, civilian-government, commercial, or non-profit. Anyone in a leadership position would find their time well spent in reading this book.

This is one of the best 'military & business" books to come out in years.

In a highly readable yet intelligent writing style, the authors explain how preparation, planning, execution AND a lack of ego all combine to build an organization as small as a rifle team to a billion-dollar multinational.

With examples taken from both the military and business worlds, this book gives everyone from newbie managers to punk MBA types a clue how to succeed in the real world. Highly reccommended !

This is a marvelous book. 46 case studies are woven into the book to illustrate the seven principles of the Maneuver Warfare. Creatively and convincingly, the authors show how these seven principles are also keys to the success of business. I find a rare combination of theoretical elegance and managerial relevance.
The book is extremely readable. I do not know much about warfare, but thanks to the authors' great work, the seven principles are clearly defined and explained, and I can appreciate their applications in business immediately through the cases that follow up.
I would recommend the book to anyone who has interest in business strategy and management.
