Great Book for Academic or Country Doctor

I just took my Boards and this book was extremely helpful. I was a country FP for 10 years, then 15 years as a teacher in a Residency program, and the last 3 years back in rural medicine. Half of what we learned in medical school is now wrong, and this review is highly evidence based. I found it especially helpful to review the sections on Nutrition, Geriatrics and Neurology. Any FP will find it helpful to review areas they do not use daily, e.g. Emergency Medicine, or Obstetrics.

Well written and enlivened by good humor (" D. Lycanthropy is not a cause of hirsuitism.") Highly recommended.

Aced the boards with this one

I purchased and utilized the first edition to prepare for my 2005 boards. Extremely long and difficult. Felt absolutely stupid as a doctor because the questions and scenarios were not realistic for a typical family physician.
HOWEVER, it turns out that the board questions were exactly as unrealistic as this book had me prepare. This book totally saved me and I aced it. Absolutely amazing. I lost 5 months of weekends struggling to complete that book but it was so worth it. Next board isn't for several more years but I am tempted to get this edition and go through it over one year period as a refresher.

Great collection

I'm still working on this book. So far, I'm pleased with the truly Board type questions that are posed. Many other Board review resources seem to be more esoteric and in detail than what the Board exam was like. Don't get me wrong, these questions are not easy to boost your confidence at all. They are a realistic approach to what would be seen in practice and in the Test. Then following, is a properly brief explanation of the answer, and quite nicely done, an explanation of why the other answers were not correct- a crucial issue when one can make a cogent argument for more than one answer. They then provide references for you to use, which I don't. I then receive a good assessment of what is lacking in my knowledge on that subject, put down this book, and go review the subject in another more in depth book. I've owned several different types of Board Review books, but not all, so can't comment on many of the other products out there, but as far as this one goes, it seems to be dead on, and is my main study source for the upcoming Test.

Fascinating Tales from a Storied Franchise

This is a fantastic and absolutely worthwhile read for any sports fan. I am primarily a hockey fan and being a transplanted Philadelphian living in Los Angeles for 20 years, I have a profound hatred for the Lakers yet I would GLADLY shell out the cover price for a book of this quaility with content of this much interest.

Many biographies and autobiographies have been produced by the Laker organization over the years. I enjoyed reading about Chamberlain (Philly's finest!), Jabbar, Magic, Jerry West, the Buss family and others indiviually. This book is a concise and comprehensive look at the whole bunch as well as many other significant figures whose contributions are not as well-chronicled.

The Lakers DVD set is considerably more expensive and insofar as telling the story of the franchise, I do not think it does the quality job Lazenby and company do here. This is really a marvelous compilation of accounts of a truly fascinating franchise that has dominated the NBA in four different eras and been highly competitive in most others.

This book should come as a gift with Laker season tickets and really is great for anyone interested in basketball or sports in general.

A Good Read For Laker Fans

A good book, although I started skipping through the last third of it - too bad there wasn't more info on the Minneapolis Lakers version and the early 70's West-Chamberlain-Goodrich Lakers - it would've been nice to read more about personalities on those Laker teams - there is already enuff media saturation with the Kobe-Shaq Lakers so i started to skip thru that section. Seems kind of sad that everyone didn't have the foresight (and media saturation) like we do now, to save every lil scrap and every piece of info, so we can have a better perspective on how things were then.

Good book - I just expected more detail

Lazenby wrote one of the best basketball books I have ever read, called The Lakers and one of the best books on the Chicago Bulls dynasty called Blood on the Horns. In this book, he tells the history of the Lakers, but this time, it is told by those who lived it. It is similar in format to Terry Pluto's excellent books Tall Tales and Loose Balls.

The book is very large - over 400 pages which makes you think it is an exhaustive and thorough collection, but it really is not. I found the book to be less informative than The Lakers, with the only difference being that that The Lakers ends in 1993 and this book goes up to the 2004 season. I was wanting more information on Magic Johnson's final comeback and the behind the scenes information on the Dennis Rodman acquisition and dismissal, but this book left me wanting much more. Furthermore on seasons that the Lakers did not do well, they are passed over briefly, so rather than being an exhaustive history, it is closer to highlights of the franchise. In defense of Lazenby, if he wrote the book I wanted, it would probably be 2 volumes, but after the bar he set with his previous work, I expected at least as much detail. If you want more detail on Magic Johnson's short lived first comeback, read The Lakers.

Lazenby goes into great detail about the Phil Jackson-Shaquille O'Neal-Kobe Bryant 4 year soap opera. We heard from the press about how Bryant broke up the team so that he could hog the ball more. Lazenby tells the other side of the story, and details what a despicable person Phil Jackson can be and how his peers and even Jerry West loathe him. He tells more about O'Neal was out of shape an uninterested in defense and rebounding and was a poor team leader. He brings credibility to the argument by often quoting the venerable Tex Winter. However, I noticed that he only briefly touches on the shortcomings of Bryant. I think he would have been better served covering this and bringing balance to the story, much as he did in Blood on the Horns. I wonder if the lack of balanced reporting is a conflict of interest, due to the fact that he wrote a Bryant biography Mad Game: The NBA Education of Kobe Bryant.

Besides exposing the Jackson/O'Neal shortcomings, the strength of the book (compared to The Lakers) is that he goes into great detail about Jack Kent Cooke's reign over the franchise, exposed how tight Jerry Buss was with his money, and covered the power plays between Jackson, Buss, and West. Also, The Lakers bounces around between time eras from the present to the past, which is a bit maddening, whereas this book has more of an authentic feel to it, since it is written in chronological order.

If you haven't read The Lakers, this is definitely worth picking up. Some of the parts will be more Cliff's Notes version compared the other book, but this book covers the last 3 NBA championships, which tells a more complete story of the franchise. If you have read the other book, and come to expect a certain level of detail from Lazenby, you may find yourself a bit disappointed.

Couldn't have passed the Registry w/o this book!

This book is excellent! I took the 4 day course from MTMI in WI, which was a great start, but the material covered wasn't everything on the Registry.

I used the 6 page outline provided by the ARRT, called Content Specifications for the Examination in Mammography, to guide my studying.

Because this book has an Index in the back, I was able to quickly look up the topics mentioned on the ARRT outline. I was shocked and delighted that the format of the book and heading titles closely match that on the outline! It made studying very easy.

As the title suggests, the content of the book is 'just the facts'. At the beginning of each chapter are vocab words with detailed descriptions. The text that follows includes diagrahms, photos, and tables. The end of the chapter has review questions with detailed answers in the back of the book. I was dissapointed that it didn't have mock registry questions, but it turns out that wasn't necessary.

This book has everything you need. Unlike x-ray school, learning this modality was all self-directed. I could have never passed the test (92%) w/o this book and the MTMI workshop!

It is easily carried around and easy to use. The book itself is well laid out, accurate and up-to-date. My main criticism is that this book adds little to what is normally available from other sources. There are other texts of similar size, price and quality in the same field; and larger more expensive texts covering the same areas as well as other areas. In general, I would expect this book to be used as a reference text in emergency departments. However, UK emergency departments have access to up-to-date information of this type online and it is usual to check the online version to be sure to be up-to-date. I'm a certified specialist in poison information (CSPI). We use Olson daily in our job. Also use it as a text for studying for our boards. Great book. Set up for easy research. Concise info. Like to use this info when discussing treatment options with physicians.
I purchased this as graduation gift for my son-in-law who just graduated with degree in nursing. Will be helpful for him working in psych nursing.

Great reference for internists/ER

I have the previous edition, but still use it all the time when I'm in the ER/wards. It covers just about everything, and has just enough background pathophys, management guidelines, and easy to find what you're looking for.

I highly recommend this book for anyone doing a toxicology rotation or who will work in an ER and see acute poisonings/ingestions.

Better Options Are Available!!!

Thanks David for your review on the book. You saved me time and money. I'm not surprised to learn that the book was a marketing gimmick for his site. Especially when considering that the release date was pushed back for over a year. That explains the repeated delays.

Though I agree that the best way to build a long term business to to focus on the Sphere of Influence, for new agents, it is also good to mix in FSBO & Expireds at least until the SOI can support a strong business base. The reason most people (including myself) have shied away from this group is primarily because of fear. Another good option would be to research and decide on a farm area. But one must be consistent by implementing a 12x12, otherwise, marketing dollars and efforts will be wasted. This is again in addition to focusing on your SOI... you never want to abandon them because they are your best support system. Another benefit of working in conjunction with a farm area, for sale by owners and Expireds is that you will in fact ADD to your SOI! If memory serves me correctly, SOI will yield 12:1 where as a farm will yield 50:1, so the SOI is CLEARLY the best choice. But when you consider BUILDING your business, especially for a new agent, don't forget to consider adding FSBO, Expireds or a farm area.

Also, for new agents starting out, I would recommend starting with a franchise or independent company. Reason being is the fees for 100% are high and paying desk fees of $500-$1200/mo is a HUGE expense for someone starting out. Most 100% companies charge for copies, printing and other items. Though I believe that 100% companies are a good thing, it has it's not for everyone, especially those starting out unless you grew up in a family that was heavily involved in real estate and THOROUGHLY know the ins and outs of the business AND have a STRONG client base STARTING OUT!

I began with a well known franchise, but wish I had gone with a different one because there were better options available. The good news is that within my 1st year of sales, a light bulb went off! And though I wasn't ready for the jump to a 100% company, I researched and joined another franchise. I recommend looking into companies such as Keller Williams Realty that offer a higher split and gives the opportunity to go to 100% with in a year. I am happy to say that next year, I will be in a position to join a 100% company.

Dated and full of typos!

The book has plenty of good ideas, but many of the tactics described are rather dated considering the current buyers market and the state of current residential real estate. Beyond being dated (for instance the author talks about purchasing a palm pilot, and how to use a little known product called Google) it feels as though you are reading the first draft because there is a typo on almost every single page!

Finally, it is a little insulting how shameless the author is in promoting his Web page and previous book. If this books is dated I can only imagine how out of touch a previous book would be!

Many of the authors ideas are fine, but the over all content is very weak.

Definitely NOT Worth the Paper It Is Printed On

First, the book is not 300 pages (as shown on the amazon website), it is only 184. The whole book is nothing more than a marketing tool to get you to his website to access "bonus features." To do so requires divulging your personal information. Just about every other page references his website "newagentsuccess.com" However, the website doesn't provide any real meat since it has basically a collection of website links that would be beneficial to a real estate agent (for a new agent, this is good). The website continues to be a marketing tool to get you to purchase his coaching program for $600+, or his FSBO lead generation system for $40 per month, or his "give yourself a raise" CDs for $200. ...not to mention that he makes money when you click and/or use his numerous affiliate links to various vendors.

Continuing with the book... he encourages you NOT to work for a 100 percent company, but rather with a independent or a franchise company. I rather have 100% of my commission and decide how to spend it on personal business expenses and personal marketing rather than splitting it with the broker and have the broker spend it on his company expenses and company marketing.

In his book he claims that with a 100 percent company, the broker makes their money through charging rent and you won't get adequate training. While that may be so with some companies, their are independent 100 percent companies around that have excellent training programs and where you don't pay any rent. I'm part of one (after searching our and interviewing 16 different real estate brokers).

He claims that the best prospects are FSBO and expired listings. While it may be true that most of FSBO eventually use a real estate agent to sell their home, it doesn't mean that it should be the focus of your business. If you want to grow a true referral based business, you need to to be in constant contact with your current/past clients and your sphere of influence. That is where your marketing and prospecting should be focused on.

Most of what he talks about in the book is common sense (such as make a list of people you know and tell them you're now a real estate agent). Overall, he just reiterates a summed up version of information that can be found in other real estate books. Even "Success as Real Estate Agent for Dummies" had more useful information.

Only just okay

This book has a lot of stuff in it. It's got a good overview of how to look at your supply chain starting with the supplier of your supplier, and going through to the customer of your customer.

It's got a lot of real world examples, and each of the six chapters ends in a 10-page real world case study of a large corporation.

However, I just couldn't get into it, even though I read it cover to cover. This was a hard book to trudge through, probably because of its very narrow target audience.

This book is written to the level of Senior Vice President of International Operations at a $800+ million company. It's at a pretty high level and maybe that's why it was so hard to read.

With only a few minor modifications, this book could be called: "World Class Marketing" or "Quality Improvement: New Directions." It's technically about Supply Chain Management, but it's at such a very high level.

Excellent book for C-Level Execs

This is the first book I've found that discusses supply chain management in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for the C-level executive. And the examples prove that real ROI value can be created by looking more carefully at a company's supply chain. As an operations executive myself, I've had trouble getting other members of my company's executive management team to pay sufficient attention to supply chain issues. The five core disciplines from this book are easy to explain, and people now understand what we need to do to make our supply chain a competitive advantage.

I was happy to find a book that includes numerous, practical examples from companies that I can relate to and advice I can actually use.

Straightforward - the finest attribute of this book

I recently added "Options for the Stock Investor" to my financial trading and investment library, hoping it would keep its promise describing it as logically written in a systematic and straightforward manner. I'm pleased to say it HASN'T DISAPPOINTED.

Unfortunately, this book hasn't received the attention it deserves among the many books devoted primarily to intermediate options traders/investors. I've always felt that options were explained in a much too "matter of fact" manner, where the most practical information is inadvertently ignored, obscured or non-existent.

Anyone trying to learn stock options is arguably bombarded by fearful information and disorganized, incomplete explanations. This short but concentrated book cuts through the many counterintuitive aspects and implicit contradictions involving stock options.

Beginners need only go to the Investopedia and similar sites on the internet to reinforce the Introduction and supplement their exposure to the language of options.

I've seen some of the worst. This book ranks highly among the best.

James Bittman treats the subject of options like a college course, beginning with basics, testing, going on to creating graphs and charts, then to how to trade options and combine strategies to your complement your investing. I finally feel confident about when and how to use options.

A good book, the title says it.

The software that came with the book that allows one to price an option by the Option Pricing Model or a Spread up to four legs was worth the purchase price of the book. Mr. Bittman discusses options from the viewpoint of a stock investor a clear manner by cover topics of interest to a stock investor. Covered Calls, Married Puts. Stock Repair. Using LEAPS as a means for gift giving. He covers when to and when not to to use each of those strategies. The chapters end in a short test. I recommend not skipping the tests but repeating them until one gets each question right. I may have missed it, but I think paper trading is an important part of learning how to trade options.

Sun Tzu: Strategies for Marketing

Some of the wisest words for marketing professionals can be found in this book, not only because Gerald Michaelson' extensive studies but also by the fascinating framework he uses. Applying Sun Tzu's philosophy to marketing makes a lot of sense. Sun Tzu's the Art of War contains a great deal of wisdom applicable to marketing and Mr Michaelson illustrates this beautifully.
Marketing professionals from all cultures will enjoy this book, as it makes relevant the universal paradox of business - that strategy must be like water, with form yet formless, and most robust when it is least rigid. Such ancient Taoist's insights are prsented here in a fresh and entertaining style that will enlighten every marketing mind.

Great Application of Sun Tzu to Marketing

I have studied Sun Tzu for over a decade and have applied the "Art of War" in various ways and in various businesses. I have read several different interpretations; as well as many attempts to apply Sun Tzu to the modern business world. Many authors fail, leaving us with only lightly touched "common sense" application and vague examples to learn from...Michaelson succeeds.

Michaelson's application, theory, examples, and format are all very successful in the use of Sun Tzu's 12 chapters translated into the world of Marketing. Each chapter is divided into smaller sub-topics, making the work easy to pick-up for quick reads. There are a few chapters detailing step-by-step stratagems. All points are reinforced with Sun Tzu's quoted text and numerous real world business examples. Even though it's a fairly easy read, I found myself skipping backwards often to connect sub-topics that build to the main point...this work gets deeper than most.

This is a definite recommendation for those wanting to apply strong Sun Tzu strategic theory to Marketing. Skip other variations of the "Art of Business" that aren't as in-depth and spend some time within these pages of real world examples and deeper Marketing principles.

Realistic Approach

This book not only offers advice but it also explains through real-life examples. I am using it properly to apply focused answers on my business plan along with the Sun Tzu book for Selling Strategies. These point out the relevant issues that make or break a business' functionality.
