From AudioFile
High cholesterol concerns many people today, and Dr. Freeman's guide to understanding the disorder and its treatments fills a niche for patients wanting more information. Alan Sklar's deep voice never mispronounces a single word in the audiobook's extensive medical vocabulary. By speaking slowly, he aids the listener's ability to absorb uncommon words and concepts, which don't have everyday equivalents: reductase inhibitors, phytosterolemia, and chylomicrons. By skillfully varying his pitch and volume, Sklar minimizes sleep induction. Since the author is a university-based researcher, one must understand that his scientific completeness--for example, including drugs' generic names--may fly over the heads of some in a general listening audience. Good solid information
By Laurie A. Brown
This book doesn't just cover cholesterol, but heart health in general. It starts with what cholesterol is and how your body manufactures it and the mechanics of heart disease, then moves on to risk factors and what will happen when you visit your doctor about this. Then it goes to how to lower your cholesterol and, thus, your heart disease risk. Diet, exercise, medications. He includes special cases- children with high cholesterol, seniors, people with established heart disease and diabetics. He gives a chapter to alternative and complementary approaches- and doesn't think much of any of them.
It's a very thorough book- the explanation of heart disease is very good. High cholesterol is not a problem on its own- it's the things it does to the arteries, and it works by several different mechanisms. Of course, even though the book is only five years old, the results of some of the studies he cites have been overturned by newer ones, but for the most part, it's a good, solid book.

If you can read only one book on cholesterol, then read this one.
By Daniel Brockman
I got results from a blood test that showed markedly higher cholesterol than the previous 4 or 5 years of tests. I bought this book to learn more about it. I found it very informative. The facts and figures are all cited, in finest scholarly style. I believe it's dated in only one respect. The author describes cholesterol in the foods you eat as a source of cholesterol in your blood, and a matter of concern if you have elevated levels of cholesterol. In the US national dietary report published in April 2015, this decades-old view is reversed, so that dietary sources of cholesterol aren't considered clinically significant any longer. I did learn that a very small proportion of the population are considered "responders" whose cholesterol goes up and down when their dietary cholesterol goes up and down. I also learned that the most reliable indicator of the probability of your having a heart attack is your age. I have read several other books on cholesterol, too, to understand my own situation. As a layman, I would say that if cholesterol is of concern to you, and if you read only one book on the topic, then this should be that book.
