About the Author
Ernest Burden was trained as an architect and is currently a writer and photographer and principal of Burden Associates, a New York marketing and presentation consulting firm.

He began his venture into preservation 40 years ago with a camera and hundreds of rolls of film. A group of Carpenter Gothic Victorian buildings was being razed in an urban renewal program in San Francisco. While the buildings were being torn down, he preserved them photographically.

Burden's first lesson in architectural salvage came as a result of that same urban renewal project, when he rescued the roof of an old Gothic church that stood in the path of the destruction. A self-styled PR blitz saved the roof and the effort was given a Special Commendation Award from the California Heritage Council.

The first project he designed as an architect involved converting an abandoned warehouse into an upscale nightclub, featuring all exposed materials and in interior atrium.

His first book was a self-published work: San Francisco's Wildflower: The Palace of Fine Arts. The book documented the story of Bernard Maybeck's masterpiece, which was built as a temporary structure, and then demolished decades later and reconstructed in permanent materials. The building was a monument of the highest order to preservation.

The first major published work as Living Barns: How to Find and Restore A Barn Of Your Own. Another book on renovation was Building Facades: Faces, Figures, and Ornamental Detail followed by Visionary Architecture: Unbuilt Works of the Imagination and the Illustrated Dictionary of Architecture, Second Edition.

Burden is a frequent speaker at conventions of the American Institute of Architects, the Society of Marketing Professional Services, and the Restoration and Renovation Conference. He also conducts workshops nationwide on professional services marketing and preservation techniques.

So important for a diver to know these things

I have a subscription to Scuba Diver magazine because it has a section called "Lessons for Life" that gives you the story of a diver who died or came close. This book includes those stories and so many more. It is so important to know the many ways that one can get into trouble and I rarely read one of these without learning something that changes the way I dive or care for my equipment. The one objection I have to certification and specialty classes is that they don't include these factual accounts of diver deaths and near misses. It is as if they don't want to scare us when in fact I find that each and every one has something to say as to how I should apporach the sport. I personally have made changes in behavior soley based upon the lessons taught by these stories and consider this book a must read for anyone diving today.

The Author does a great job in selecting a variety of scenarios

Twenty diving incidents are described and analyzed in details as what was the probable cause, how they could have been avoided and what are the safety lessons learned. The Author does a great job in selecting a variety of scenarios. It should be part of any advanced, and maybe also any basic, diving training and for sure it should be part of the references of professional and technical divers.

Great analysis of what can go wrong and why

One might consider this book by Michel Ange, who is Technical Editor of Scuba Diving Magazine, a downer as someone dies in almost every chapter. That's because Ange presents a series of case studies of diving gone wrong. Each chapter tackles a specific issue and tells the story on how something went wrong during a scuba dive, often with deadly consequences. The stories are real, though names and places have been changed so as to preserve the privacy of those involved.

While Ange's book presents some harrowing evidence that our sport can be dangerous and deadly, we must consider that this applies to almost any sport, and even to life in general. More accidents happen in bathrooms than anywhere else, and no one would consider them especially dangerous or deadly places. The value in Diver Down is that it describes what CAN go wrong if rules are not observed and common sense does not prevail. That is the gist and primary value of this book, to point out what can go wrong if we do not pay attention, become over-confident, or cut corners.

Each chapter is dedicated to a single topic: Nitrox, trimix, over-confidence, lack of experience, cave diving, wreck diving, decompression sickness, dry suits, lack of maintenance, navigation, rebreathers, following rules, and so on. Ange presents a scenario, describes what happenes, often to the bitter end, then analyzes the situation and closes the chapter with a set of rules on how the accident could have been avoided.

What makes the book extra valuable is the technical explanations inserted into each chapter. They explain, in plain English, the underlying concepts, physics, and technology. Likewise, the book's lenghty introduction serves as a Scuba 101 course (and is actually named "Scuba 101"). It is clear and concise and contains a lot of good information.

You will also quickly find that Ange heavily leans on some common sense guidelines: Follow the rules, always. Don't do anything you are not trained to do. Take diving and equipment maintenance very seriously.

Layout and graphics are basic. Do not look for colors and fancy graphics. And if you do not wish to know the outcome of each chapter right upfront, skip the intros that give them away. I have no idea why they are there.

Recommended. In fact, this book is so good, it deserved better graphic layout and treatment.

Poor organization and flow

This book was a difficult read. The content isn't particularly difficult, but the book's organization and scattered subject matter made it difficult to get through. Though I read the book cover to cover, I often felt I was rereading material.

For example, his 21-page treatment of "Players- Hackers, Crackers, etc." conveyed no more information than did his 6-page overview of them in his Introduction. Even so, I have the distinct impression that the most he's ever seen of a "hacker" is on TV.

My background in this topic has been purely educational (that is to say I've taken 1 forensics class) and I have to agree that there are several books that cover the topic more clearly and more in depth than this one.

My recommendation... go to your local library or book store and spend 30 minutes reading the Introduction, you won't be missing much.

Interesting read, but there are gigabytes of similar FEEE data on the same topic on the net.

Aresh Look At Developing New Hockey Players

This is NOT "Coaching Hockey for Dummies"

When I first ordered this book I thought it would be just be another "How to..." book. This book is DETAILED. From the advise on managing your team to the skating, shooting, puck handling and checking fundamentals to the instruction for each and every position on the ice. And to top it all off there are countless detailed drills for every situation and level of team and player developemnet. As a USA Hockey Coach at the Bantam level, this book will go into my briefcase as a handy reference. This should not be the "Baffled" parents guide, but the "Detailed" Parents guide to Coaching Youth Hockey. This should be mandatory reading for every parent and coach before they enter the rink. This is truly an awesome effort.

Great book that touches on every aspect

Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to [...] That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.

A Guide for Doctors

Produced by the medical division of McGraw Hill this is a book directed to the medical industry. It is written by two physicians and approaches bioterrorism from the standpoint of the doctor that will be treating the victum of an attack.

The physician is first responsible for recognizing a medical situation that is dramatically different from the patients he normally sees. Then he has to think about the chances of this coming from bioterrorism, and to subsequently notify the appropriate authorities. And of course while this is going on, he is responsible for treating the affected individuals.

The book discusses the Big-5 diseases generally believed to be the most likely to be used as weapons: Smallpox, Anthrax, Plague, Tularemia, and Smallpox. Then it covers biotoxins, chemical weapons, finally it covers radiological weapons.

The emphasis in this book is treatment. It does not spend much time on things like evaluating the increased likelyhood of some types of attacks when compared with others.

Aggie Casey, R.N., M.S., is an associate in medicine at Harvard Medical School, the director and clinical nurse specialist for the Cardiac Wellness Program at the Mind/Body Medical Institute, and coauthor of Mind Your Heart.

Herbert Benson, M.D., is the founder and president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and author of The Relaxation Response, as well as many other books and more than 170 scientific publications.

Comprehensive health makeover

This book covers all the important health areas where improvement in health is achievable. It offers several choices in each area rather than the more common dogmatic approach found in books that say: "my revolutionary new discovery will save your life. Obey!" There are some areas where all the current health and nutrition debates aren't covered. But unless your BMI is 24, you don't have to wonder about them till you get there. The program here is intelligent and practical. Read the book. Consider the options. Pick a set that you think will work for you. Discuss with your health care provider (optional unless you want/need to change meds or get advice on exercising). Then make a table and chart your progress. This will help you stay with the program. Provide space to record your failures. They are inevitable. So consider them reminders to keep trying. You'll make it as long as you just stick with it. Just keep getting back on your program even if you fall off every other day. When you get to the point you actually see some progress , you will want to stick with it. Review the book occasionally to vary your program and maintain it. When you succeed, you will be able to stop most of your meds; stop worrying; and enjoy your life.
