Grade 9 Up. Updating a 20-volume set for a 5-year revision of Science & Technology is a difficult task. When original articles are written by experts in their fields, basic information may remain the same, but it is hoped that some "recent developments" would be added. Updated materials are evidenced in entries such as Asia, climate modeling, geologic thermometry, and global positioning systems. In some sections, such as compact disc, computer graphics, electric-power generation, gravitation, nuclear engineering, and production of human insulin, there are no changes to the text, but the bibliographies have been updated. Entries on acquired immunological tolerance, aircraft design, fingerprinting, industrial trucks, and narcotics have not been updated. There are new entries in this revision, such as climate history, clinical immunology, fullerene, global warming, geographic information systems, object-oriented programming, and nuclear medicine. Some of the entries have been completely rewritten by new authors, such as those on acquired immune deficiency syndrome, aircraft-collision avoidance system, breast disorders, geological time scale, North America, nuclear magnetic resonance, and radiation chemistry. Topics from 1994-1997 yearbooks, such as hanta viruses, are not included in this revision. According to the publishers, 23% of 7100 entries are new or totally revised, 1750 of 13,000 illustrations are entirely new, and 6 color plates are new. Known for its tradition of excellence, the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (MEST) sets the standard for science encyclopedias. First published in 1960, MEST serves as an excellent resource for those who need an authoritative overview of a subject within the major disciplines of science and technology. Contributed by 5000 internationally known researchers (1500 more than in the eighth edition), the 7100 articles are well written and well organized. The excellent illustrations, primarily drawings with some black-and-white photographs and color plates, are central to the text. The topical index groups article titles under broad subject categories, while the 500-page analytical index provides more specific indexing. The set is updated every five years, with this edition's comprehensive revisions emphasizing industrial engineering, information technology and computing, chemistry and chemical engineering, physics and astronomy, the biomedical sciences, and the environmental, earth, and climate sciences. The short bibliographies at the end of each article have been revised, and the study guides have been expanded to cover 15 major scientific disciplines such as agriculture, electronics, and environmental science. Aside from this, very little is changed from the eighth edition. Both MEST and the recent Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology (EPST) are excellent science encyclopedias and complement each other. Although the sets are comparable in size, EPST has only 790 articles, a difference that results from MEST's breaking up a topic into several individual articles. In contrast, EPST organizes the information into fewer chapter-length articles, making it better suited for self-study. Because MEST has slightly broader coverage and costs about $1000 less than EPST, most libraries would probably prefer to purchase this set if they have to make a choice. Highly recommended for all libraries. It has been 5 years since the publication of the eighth edition of this internationally known encyclopedia and 42 years since the first edition. For students, the general public, and researchers, the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology has become the most-used general encyclopedia covering science and engineering technology. From its first edition in 1960, its goal has been to provide information that was understandable and authoritative for the general public, secondary school students, undergraduates, and researchers. The principal purpose is stated in the preface: "To provide the widest possible range of articles that will be understandable and useful to any person of modest technical training who wants to obtain information outside his particular field of specialization." It has maintained this goal through the years, with no other science encyclopedia targeting such a wide range of readers.

There are still 20 volumes, printed in double-column format, with good use of white space, excellent illustrations, bibliographies, and a detailed analytical index. The ninth edition contains 7,100 signed articles written by more than 5,000 authors from universities, industry, and government agencies, including 30 Nobel Prize winners. Each article begins with a definition and concise overview of the topic, followed by a discussion, and ends, in most cases, with a brief bibliography. Within the articles there are some 62,000 cross-references to related articles, providing the reader the widest possible access to all related topics. The index volume contains a list of all contributors with their affiliations and the titles of each articles that he or she has written.

Of particular use are the 15 subject study guides that provide a program of study and reference that can be used by educators in secondary schools and colleges. These guides permit an individual to become informed on a particular topic. The topical index is a useful tool that groups the 7,100 articles under 87 major subject categories. Finally, the analytical index provides access to all of the information included in the 19 volumes of text. The color of the line drawings has changed from a lavender tone to a turquoise tone. The color illustrations are the same and excellent. However, the black-and-white photographs were in many cases better and crisper in the eighth edition. The binding should hold up to extreme use.

Though editors state that the encyclopedia has been extensively revised and new entries have been added, the total number of articles is the same as reported in the eighth edition. There is no indication which articles were dropped and which are new. With an encyclopedia covering such a wide range of topics, one cannot expect all articles to be completely rewritten. However, one would expect articles on topics of great interest to the general public to have some revision. The entry for Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has had no revision, even though great advances have been made in the treatment of the disease, and there is no bibliography. In spot-checking other articles, it appears that revisions are minimal. Some articles have had one or two new additions to the bibliography. There has been some expansion on material relating to the human genome, biotechnology, neuroscience, and forensic science. When the total number of articles remains the same, it makes one wonder what was dropped to add the six new entries covering forensic science.

All in all, this is still a highly recommended encyclopedia for general information on science and technology. It is not intended to be the last stop for the latest information on current "hot topics." For libraries on a limited budget, the ninth edition may not be necessary if the eighth edition is owned, especially if a good collection of up-to-date, specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries has been purchased.

This Encylopedia is one for the angels

There is something almost comical about the thought of reviewing the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. It is an amazing work, such a stunning compendium of erudition in such a wide array of difficult and rigorous subjects that the ordinary rules and reasons of writing a review don't really apply to it.
Reviewing any other work would function with the assumption that you *had* actually read it; that you were familiar with it; and also that you were implicitly prepared to face intelligent rebuttal with regard to the opinion you offered and the comments you made. However, when it comes to The Encyclopedia, it would require more than ordinary intellectual stamina and range of interests to *read* it for review and the same notion applies to the possibility of rebuttal: if you are enough of an intellectual giant that you can talk intelligently about the sum of what is in The Encyclopedia, then who is there to rebutt you? Who is going to come out of the woodwork and dissaggree with what you have to say about it? No real 'revue' is possible or meaningful when talking about it, but some things can be said about it and nearly all those things are golden.
My experience with The Encyclopedia goes back to my days in highschool, more than twenty years ago, when I regularly went to the library between classes and used the encyclopedia to answer the questions that occured to me at random. Back then, The Encyclopedia was a godsend for me, something that had answers to questions to that my teachers didn't have the time to answer. It was a browser's book for me; the kind of text that offered the cross-referenced characteristics of intertwined questions leading to other questions leading to yet other questions that exactly foreshadow the hypertext concepts that run the web today. Article after article pointed toward things that I would later find out more about only in adulthood, long years after I left the library.
I can still clearly see the photo illustrating The Monroe Effect__where the forces generated by the shape of an explosive charge concentrate the force and direction of the explosive force. The illustration was a small gray photo showing the words 'Monroe Effect' stamped in reverse into a light-colored block of plastic explosive which lay next to a metal ingot which had had the words the same words imprinted into it by explosive force.
I remember this and many other things from other articles that awakened my curiosity with regard to things and that remain with me and enrich my life to this day. However, I think that There is one clear flaw in The Encyclopedia: I can find no electronic edition of it. I have never seen a CD- or DVD-ROM edition of it and, the commercial considerations of McGraw-Hill aside, that seems like a great failing. When the Oxford Dictionary exists both on CD-ROM and on paper, and when all of National Geographic back to 1888 can be found in a DVD-ROM collection, it seems silly to have this great repository of scientific and technical erudition limited to non-computer readable forms. I could be wrong, an electronic edition mightt actually exist for all I know, but if I am right, I think that the world would profit by having a portable edition of the work available for scientists, technicians, doctors, teachers and any of the other groups who might want the information it has to offer at their fingertips in a portable form. Aside from this single flaw, I can honestly say that I my experience with The Encyclopedia is something that glows in my memory and I frankly admit that I covet the high-quality electronic edition that I wish were available.
I suppose that this is less a review than it is a homage to the people and the will that worked to put The Encyclopedia together. All in all, I would like to say, 'Thank you' and that I can heartily recommend the encyclopedia not just to scientists and students in scientific fields but to anyone who is fascinated by things of the mind.

From a teacher, this is pretty neat!

As a Spanish teacher and Spanish curriculum author (Flip Flop Spanish), I'm always looking for great tools to pull out in my classes and keep things fresh and interesting. This is a neat book! You cut out all the little cards inside, and then use the cues to put together your own sentences. I haven't yet used the CD.

My own children did not jump at the chance to use these cards, but once I sat down and made a few examples by tossing cards out like a poker player, they joined in, especially when we were al making silly sentences. I am bilingual, and so this was a fun event in the household, and I believe in the class, it will prove useful as well. But if you are a beginner, get a foundation with another book first, then add this in to build confidence and usefulness in your language learning.

The best age for these cards is five and up. Younger than that, the children are more focused on just looking at the picture rather than using them to communicate and speak in Spanish. -Being able to read fairly well might also be a prerequisite for your child too, to cut down on frustration. I will listen to the CD this week and update the review soon.

Great for Beginners and those starting to make sentences in Spanish

My 5 year old and I started learning Spanish together. We tried multiple books, CD's, etc., which did not help. This book is one that actually taught us a lot, and we retained what we learned. Since the same picture is repeated every time a particular Spanish word is used, there is visual reinforcement of the word. I would highly recommend this book for beginners.

For those just learning to speak spanish from ages 8 to 80 this book, CD and flashcard package makes learning spanish extremely easy. My 11 year-old daughter was struggling in her 6th-grade spanish class and this combo really helped. Very soon you'll be prepared to buy another program to get to the next level.

Y. K. Lin holds the Charles E. Schmidt Eminent Scholar Chair in Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. He founded the Center for Applied Stochastics Research at Florida Atlantic University and has served as its Director since 1984. He received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (Structural) from Stanford University, and Doctor of Engineering honoris causa from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Prior to moving to Florida, he taught for two years in China, one year in Ethiopia, and 24 years (1960-1983) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. He is a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Academy of Mechanics. He has served as a consultant for defense, aerospace, automotive companies, and government laboratories. His publications include Probabilistic Theory of Structural Dynamics (McGraw-Hill, 1967; Krieger Publishing Co., 1976), and over 200 technical papers. He is the recipient of the Alfred M. Freudenthal Medal and the Theodore von Karman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the J. P. Den Hartog Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Alexander von Humboldt Award for Senior U.S. Scientists from Germany. A Registered Professional Engineer in Florida and Illinois, Lin is listed in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, and the International Who’s Who in Education.

G. Q. Cai holds a joint appointment of Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Center for Applied Stochastics Research at Florida Atlantic University where he received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. His work has been presented at multiple conferences and published in the Journal of Applied Mechanics, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, the AIAA Journal, the International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, and the Journal of Engineering Mechanics.

A must have!

I am a third year medical student and just finished my Pediatrics rotation. I felt like this book hit the highlights of what was covered on the shelf exam. I wish that I would have started reading it sooner, but due to a rerouting problem I didn't get the book until about 2 weeks before the shelf exam. Like many medical books, it is not a quick read even when you have reviewed. This is not a learning book, but a review book. I used NMS as my primary source but used this to review. It does take quite awhile to get through, but the outer margins have valuable information for both clinical and testing uses. The important points are outlined in the margins and coded with symbols to let you know if it is a testing point or procedure point, etc. I though it was a valuable book though, but start it with some other primary source near the beginning of your rotation. Hope this helps!

Thourough, yet managable!

This book is an incredibly awesome asset to third year medical students. It goes from the ground up and really gives the high yield details needed to do well on exams. This is one of the best books in the first aid series because it explains things so much better than the other books in the series. It also has a lot of intangables to really shine on your rotation. For example, a basic review on echocardigrams is included in the cardio chapter, PALS is reviewed at the end of the book, and practical points on routine health and supervision are included. It coveres just about every topic that you'll encounter on pediatrics and is managable to get through. Don't let the 500 pages intimidate you. The first aid format is notorious for an outline form, diagrams, and pictures. It's really not that hard to get through. The high yield notes in the margins are A+. They aren't stupid/often useless details that Step up to Medicine often adds (great book but often bad margin notes). They are almost all good tid-bits to answer questions. Grab this book and tear up your miniboard and Step 2.

About the Author
Donald Watson, FAIA, NCARB, is an architect in private practice. He is former Dean and Professor of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York (1990-2000) and former Visiting Professor at Yale School of Architecture and Chair of Yale's Master of Environmental Design Program (1970-1990). He has received the 2002 ASCA Distinguished Professor Award and a AIA Educational Honors Award (1997). His architectural work has received national and international design awards. His books include Designing and Building a Solar House (Garden Way, 1977), and Climatic Building Design, co-authored with Kenneth Labs (McGraw-Hill, 1983), recipient of the 1984 Best Book in Architecture and Planning Award from the American Publishers Association. He is editor-in-chief of Time-Saver Standards for Building Materials and Systems (2000) and Time-Saver Standards for Urban Design (2003).

Michael J. Crosbie, Ph.D. is active in architectural journalism, research, teaching, and practice. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture from Catholic University. He has previously served as technical editor for Architecture and Progressive Architecture magazines and is a former contributing editor to Construction Specifier. He is a licensed architect and a senior associate at Steven Winter Associates, a building systems research and consulting firm in Norwalk, Connecticut, and the editor-in-chief of Faith & Form magazine. Dr. Crosbie has won several journalism awards. He is the author of more than a dozen books on architectural subjects and several hundred articles that have appeared in publications such as Architectural Record, Architecture, Collier's Encyclopedia Yearbook, Construction Specifier, Fine Homebuilding, Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, Progressive Architecture, and Wiley's Encyclopedia of Architecture, Design, Engineering & Construction. He has been a visiting lecturer/critic at University of Pennsylvania; Columbia University; University of California, Berkeley; University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee; Yale School of Architecture; and the Moscow Architectural Institute and is adjunct professor of architecture at the Roger Williams University School of Architecture.

I made a mistake. Don't make the same one yourself.

I cannot warn you strongly enough against buying this book. Were it possible, I would rate this at 0 stars. Supposedly it is written by an experienced professor and lecturer. If this is in fact true, I hope he no longer is employed by any reputable university. As a sophomore who has been away from school for some time, I bought this sight unseen from Amazon.com, intending to use it as a refresher prior to the end of my military service and before I re-entered college. I have found it riddled with factual errors, lacking in its depth and misguided in its focus.
The book attempts to introduce the reader to chemistry, then produces a table with the first 11 elements and their valences, leaving the rest unknown. It does the same for molecular physics, then states that an electron is 2000 times more massive than a proton. It touches on astronomy, then claims the Grand Canyon was created by a meteorite impact. It tries to discuss Einstein's concept of space-time, but does absolutely nothing for relating the actual formulae or demonstrating the concept in any way to help the reader understand it. The book does however waste the paper to discuss what would happen if the sun's mass was turned into a black hole, and how even though Sol's mass is unchanged, it would mysteriously begin sucking in nearby stars. It talks about the speed of light and refraction through a clear substance, then mentions two theories, one which claims light travels slower through denser materials, one which claims light moves faster- and never states which is correct.
Patrick from Sydney apparently meant to review another book, because this is certainly not a 500 page textbook. The 240 pages of material are in a comfortably large font, with little enough real information that each chapter can be read without difficulty in about the same time it takes to read a magazine article. There is no math beyond the most basic of algebra, with a single page devoted to the definition of sine, cosine and tangent so that Snell's law of refraction can even be brought up. The primary focus of this book seems to be a cursorary history of physics, but I would prefer reading a decent encyclopedia's individual entries than the thin overview presented in "Teach Yourself Physics." For the irrelevant discussion on the future of power generation in England and "blue sky research" that was out of date when this book went to the publisher, I would rather pick up a copy of Nature, Smithsonian or Omni.
I thoroughly regret wasting my money and time on this book and urge you not to do so as well.

**Description** This book contains 49 real-life clinical cases designed to both help teach gross anatomy and help medical students prepare for USMLE Step 1. Each clinical case presents a patient with relevant history and symptoms, and uses the case (typically an injury or pathology) as an educational tool to teach the anatomy related to that case. It also provides USMLE Step 1 type multiple choice questions with answers. Each case ends with and key "Anatomical Pearls" and reference for further explanations if needed. The discussion in almost all cases includes tables and illustrations to clarify the anatomical issues.

**Purpose** The purpose is to aid medical students while they learn gross anatomy and prepare them for USMLE Step 1.

**Audience** The audience is medical students who are taking gross anatomy and studying for USMLE Step 1. The book is meant to serve as a supplement to traditional books and atlases and solidify clinical relevance of anatomy.

**Features** The 49 cases are divided into regions. After the description of the clinical case, there are a series of open-ended questions. The questions are answered by explaining the anatomy behind the case with extensive tables and illustrations of the relevant anatomy. Following are, generally, three USMLE Step 1 style multiple choice questions with explanations and references for further reading. Useful features include the "Anatomical Pearls" of key anatomical points and the cross references of cases by diagnosis.

**Assessment** The book does a nice job with the clinical case approach. It covers many of the classic clinical cases that medical students are likely to encounter in their future practice. The bolding of key names and structures as well as the very complete index are also useful features. In the field of anatomy review books, this one is unusual, in that there are relatively few clinical cases, but each one includes an extensive explanation of both the normal and clinically relevant anatomy with lots of illustrations and tables. No other books on gross anatomy take this approach. Many medical students will find it very useful.

Useful USMLE Prep

This book has been helpful in my USMLE preparation due to the case-based format, high yield emphasis, and the anatomical pearls. However, this book was poorly edited -- there are numerous errors in the text, mislabelled diagrams, etc. If you plan to use this book, have an anatomy atlas at your side, so that you can have a second source for accuracy.

Great Prep for USMLE

Don't neglect anatomy for Step 1! Case file organizes the huge subject to clinically relevant vignettes. All i needed to know for the boards was in this book! Easy and quick read as well.

Too small figures in Kindle version

I like the paperback version of this book, Case Files: Gross Anatomy, 2nd Edition, but the Kindle version has a flaw -- some of the figures are too small, or low-res, so it is hard to see details and texts in such figures.
