The basics of good communication skills

Although the title might lead you to think this is a book on creating the correct powerful phrases to improve your writing that is not what the book is about. This is a book about oral communication and how to express yourself in a manner that is non-confrontational and yet lets the other person know what you think. Meryl Runion discusses phrases that kill and cause the recipient to lose respect for you and your message as well as positive phrases to express yourself. She devotes a chapter each to various situations where power phrases could be used. Examples of some of those situations include using them to perfect a connection, to say what you think, to say what you feel, to make powerful requests, to refuse what you don't want, to get people to open up, to apologize without groveling, to respond to unkind criticism, to handle angry persons, to express anger, to handle disagreements, and to address issues. "How to Use Power Phrases" is a book on verbal communication and responding appropriately to various situations and is a recommended read.

I love it! It's immediately practical and useful. I learned how to respond to my critical boss, assertively address a backstabber, and most importantly, convey my anger and disappointment without blamin the other person. That lesson alone was worth way more than the price of the book. What a value! I'm using what I learned in this book every day.

This book is helping me tremendously at work and in my personal life. I had no idea how weak my language was. I was afraid to say what I thought and ask for what I want. I was always concerned that I would disapoint people out inconvenience them. This book helped me to learn how to communicate effectively while continuing to be a really nice person that gives and gets respect.

"If I were starting out in the telecom field this would be the first book that I'd recommend that anyone read. It gives you a high level look at: what protocols do and are used for; what the primary access technologies are; a great description of the telephony system that provides the main infrastructure of the Internet; and, the primary transport technologies that are being used today. Because this is a "crash course" book don't look for great detail in every topic, however, if you are looking for a compendium that covers the telecomm field all in one book then this is the book you need. My networking background has been mostly in the copper and fiber optic technologies, so I found the sections about the new 802.11 wireless technologies the most interesting. But some of things that I found unique for a book like this and most fascinating are the pictures of scenes and equipment taken inside of actual telephone central offices and the anecdotes about real life happenings in the telecom world. So if you have anything to do with telecom, be it as a user, CTO, IT manager, technology student, technology teacher, marketing or sales person of telecom or buyer of telecom, then this book should have a place on your desk." "The author of Telecom Crash Course, Stephen Shepard, is one of the most interesting, knowledgeable writers in the field today. He manages to turn what could be a dreadfully dull subject into a scintillating story of science, history and data communication hardware. The content is up-to-date and well organized, the illustrations very appropriate and the index very thorough. Personally, however, I find Mr. Shepherd's sense of humor in the face of such weighty topics to be the best part of my reading experience. Who else could work Vinton Cerf and Douglas Adams into the same narrative? Mr. Shepherd uses ingenious metaphors to clarify difficult concepts, as he does in the excerpt below regarding conflicting world standards. "Many countries play football, for example, but the rules are all slightly different. In the United States, players are required to weigh more than a car, yet be able to run faster than one. In Australian Rules football, the game is declared forfeit if it fails to produce at least one body part amputation on the field... They are both football, however. In data communications, the problem is similar; there are many protocols out there that accomplish the same thing." Mr. Shepherd manages to infuse what could be a terribly dry catalog of facts with cheerful, sometimes almost whimsical language that keeps the reader's interest throughout the most convoluted jungle of acronyms, jargon and obscure technical terminology. I found the information in this text to be clear, logical and very helpful in leading me to a better understanding of the highly important field of 21st century telecommunications. Buy this book, you won't regret it."

About the Author
Steven Shepard is the president of the Shepard Communications Group in Williston, Vermont. A professional author and educator with 22 years of varied experience in the telecommunications industry, he has written books and magazine articles on a wide variety of topics. Great book for everything Telecom. Covers past, current and future technologies. If you are a tech nut like me, buy this book and read it cover to cover.

good, but may be overkill for some

I really enjoyed this book, especially the anecdotes in the introduction, but I can't realy see alot of applications for a "crash-course" that is this long. There are many situations I can envision where someone would need to learn about telecom networks quickly, but they probably wouldn't need to know many of the intricacies that Shepard deals with and they almost certainly wouldn't be interested in his anecdotes and discussion of undersea cable laying.

However, I don't know of any other comprehensive book like this so it may be your only option. Either way I certainly enjoyed reading it and intend to buy his other books, but to read at my leisure.

Well Explained Introduction to Telecommunications

Very well written and entertaining introduction to telecommunications. The author gives a great overview of how all of the parts fit together and why the standards were evolved and the problems that they solved. Interesting historical tidbits thrown in here and there. This is a good book for those who are new to the industry or if you want to get the big picture of how everything fits together. This is the best introduction to telecommunications text that I've read. Afterwards, you would go on to read/research the details about specific standards.

It works for architecture, too!

After thirty years in the practice of architecture, I decided to learn a bit more about project management. Knowing myself as I do, I decided that the best way to do this would be to enroll in a formal course which would force me to do reading and exercises. While struggling with the assigned text and study materials, I accidentally stumbled on Sid Kemp's Project Management Demystified. What a relief! Here, in one easy-to read book is

everything I really wanted to know. Unlike many books Sid's does not assume that the reader has any prior knowledge of the field. More importantly for someone like me, it does not assume that all projects are multi-million dollar efforts! In fact, the example which runs throughout the book is his own "project" of installing a home entertainment center. Other examples are equally easy to understand. The book comes with easy-to-use templates and instructions for use with real projects. Sid's writing is clear (and accurate, based on a comparison with my text) while giving a light touch to an important subject. I recommend it without reservation.

The ideas and tools found in Project Management Demystified can be applied to any project. The anecdotes in the book show us that even the smallest error, if left unchecked, can result in project disaster! Project Management Demystified helps us to improve the quality of our project management so that we can reduce costs and deliver on time. I recently experienced tension during a project during my senior year at college. After reading Project Management Demystified, I was able to resolve the difficulties I was having with my partner to achieve project success. I think more college students ought to read this book.

Project Management DeMystified not only dymystifies project management but is a whole course in emotional literacy. I am new to board development,grant development and award processes, and working with large groups of people. I know that coming to agreements with people who have the skills to maintain agreements is the key to good project management whether it is in the school, or office, or home. Mr. Kemp masterfully shows readers how to come to workable agreements. Also, the tone of the book is gentle and kind. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to navigate life with greater ease.

A Lot to Celebrate!

Chase's Calendar of Events is more than a directory. It carries purpose, triumphs, and causes that will help humanity evolve in so many areas.
In this 2004 edition, you will see a new national holiday "National Divorced Parents for Children Week" which begins every October 1st. I created this holiday to remind divorced parents that their children are a part of each of them equally, and that each parent deserves honor and respect. This week long holiday puts children first, by giving their parents the opportunity to display healthy adult courtesy and respect to the other parent, solely for the benefit of their children.
You can create a holiday that has purpose and meaning too! This book is a fantastic resource to bring people together for reasons to celebrate, and make meaningful changes in our society. Well thought out questions.....

The first question I had when I was to purchase this book was whether this book was good for the USMLE Step 2 and 3.

The answer, in my case atleast, is an emphatic 'yes'. From my experience of Step 1, I have come to the conclusion that there is no quick solution to the USMLE exams - books like First Aid and some other 100 pg 'high yeild' review books can help you pass and score above average but getting great scores requires more than just that. The questions on the exam [step 1] were very varied and I don't expect the questions on step 2 to stick to what Kaplan and other review books call 'high yeild'. Being a little over-prepared is definitely worth the effort. And that's where this book is an absolute ace!

About this book - about 1000 Qs - well researched - fantastically up-to-date - it "is" the 2005 edition!. They are well arranged - meaning if you are in a chapter on rheumatology, the questions on Rheumatoid arthritis are clustered together. While solving them and while reading the solutions, one gets a wholesome idea about that disease. This also means that you don't have to read another 'review' book to get to know the subject matter. The explanations are detailed enough to make using a short review book superfluous. That the answers are referenced to the corresponding pages of the Harrison's Textbook is an added benefit.

About the questions, more impressive than the difficulty level is their construction. All choices are well thought out and there are hardly any sitters. The questions stay away from tiny details and do a great job at testing basic concepts in a somewhat difficult fashion - ideal for USMLE step 2 preparation in my opinion.

Guess that'll be it.

This book saved my @ss!

If you are reading this, you are probably preparing for an ABIM internal medicine exam in addition to all your other duties. There is never enough time, is there? Well, I was preparing for the ABIM recertification exam, and it had been 10 years since I'd finished residency. I had slogged through the Mayo review book over the course of five months, dutifully going over every page. Tres painful. There were three weeks left before the exam, and I figured I'd give this book a try. I quickly discovered how ignorant I was, despite doing the Mayo book. Charlie Wiener taught me a lot of critical care medicine way back when, and this text was a lot like sitting down with Charlie. If you are a former member of the Osler Medical House Staff (or did residency training at some other urban hospital), the case scenarios will give you flashbacks. The questions are well-written, and the answers give you really good feedback. The questions are highly relevant, reflecting what the ABIM wants you to know. There are a handful of errors here and there, where the letter of the answer in the key has a different letter than the same correct answer in the question... perhaps the editors changed the order of some of the answers or some of the distractor answers between editions. Mildly annoying, but not fatal.

I got my pass notice from the ABIM today. I'm convinced that Charlie's book made a crucial difference. Yeah, the book lists for $55, but it's a bargain compared to the $550 it costs to take the recert examination over. :-)

Excellent board review book

This book is for preparation for the internal medicine boards, which I am currently studying for. The chapters are divided by specialty for focused review. There are over 1000 questions and they focus on points that would be found in Harrison's text.

The questions tend to be fairly difficult and I suspect they might be harder than actual board questions. However, the majority of questions focus on the key points of the "need to know" diseases of internal medicine. So knowing these questions will likely be good prep for the boards.

The answers provided are quite detailed and it is like reading a summary out of Harrison's. The incorrect answers are reasoned out, which is helpful.

In comparison to MKSAP, the questions are likely more of a "classical" disease presentation sytle and less of a clinical approach style that MKSAP often uses. Difficulty level is roughly equivalent.

I would recommend this book to anyone preparing for the boards. It should be used in addition to other question banks for diversity of preparation.

About the Author
John Wooden (1910-2010), guided the UCLA Bruins to ten NCAA basketball championships over a 12-year period, including four perfect seasons and an 88-game winning streak. He was named ESPN’s “Greatest Coach of the 20th Century” and voted “#1 Coach of All Time” by The Sporting News. Sports Illustrated said it best when they said: “There’s never been a finer man in American sports than John Wooden, or a finer coach.” In 2003 John Wooden was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Steve Jamison is America's foremost author and authority on the life and philosophy of John Wooden. Mr. Jamison is a consultant to the UCLA Anderson Scool of Business’ John Wooden Global Leadership Program. He has collaborated with Coach Wooden on an award-winning PBS presentation as well as several books, including his final book, The Wisdom of Wooden: My Century On and Off the Court.

This is a great book to help any coach of any sport get a good feel for the right way to coach young players. Teach them good life lessons and skills. It gives an insight into a great coach and even greater man.

A must read for any sports fan!

A little background on John Wooden: he coached the UCLA Bruins to 10 national basketball titles in 12 years . . . even if you're not a hoops fan, imagine any team--high school, college or pro--ever doing that, and you'll realize that it's virtually an impossible task . . .yet Wooden managed to accomplish it, at times with such great players as Kareem Abdul Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) and Bill Walton; at other times with guys you probably never even heard about.

So that's why I jumped at the chance to read MY PERSONAL BEST:

LIFE LESSONS FROM AN ALL-AMERICAN JOURNEY that Wooden wrote with Steve Jamison . . . it was excellent and a "must" read for any sports fan, coach or parent of an athlete . . . adding to my enjoyment were rare, never-before-seen pictures from Wooden's private collection.

You might not learn anything that you haven't heard before, but that's much of what made Wooden such a great coach--and man . . . he stuck to the basics, believing that if his players practiced them, they would succeed . . . no detail was considered insignificant; for example, he

planned practices down to the exact minute on three-by-five inch cards and in notebooks "so there was never any standing around waiting for something to happen."

He also was a big believer in the use of maxims and mottos, tacking them on the bulletin board . . . among them:

Discipline yourself and others won't have to,

Respect every opponent but fear none,

The best way to improve your team is to improve yourself,

Do not mistake activity for achievement,

It is amazing how much we can accomplish when non one cares

who gets the credit, and

Time spent getting even would be better spent getting ahead.

As Wooden notes, "Some might say these are corny expressions, but I believe the messages they contain are true and have a positive impact on those who read them."
