Okay, but not great

The book had good tips, but I found it lacking in some areas. The gist of the book is that depression is perpetuated and enabled by our highly individualistic society. In a hunter-gatherer society, no one is allowed to get depressed; in our Western society it happens all the time. The premise of the book is fine and I applaud the authors for their innovative approach. Sadly we've become a therapy/medicine obsessed culture whereas we feel that all of our problems can be solved by going to a doctor or professional. As such, the authors rightly tap into the fact that humans have been healing themselves from depression - long before psychology and psychiatry - mainly through the power of spirituality and the power of healing relationships.

With that said, I have two problems with the book. One, while there were a lot of gold nuggets here and there, the Uplift program is a little hard to follow without a trained professional to help. I think the authors know that, which leads me to believe that they are using this book primarily to advertize their innovative treatment as opposed to using this book to help individuals like me who suffer from depression. My second beef is that not all the time are great fulfilling networks and relationships possible. Their prescriptions for creating satisfying relationships seemed a little cursory and superficial and not very realistic in all situations. Near the end of the book, I started to think the book shouldn't be called "Creating Optimism," but rather, "Creating Fulfilling Relationships with Yourself and Others," or maybe "The Joys of Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Communication."

Other than that, I think "Creating Optimism" is a great companion book for many other self-help books out there.

Creating Optimism changes lives!

Creating Optimism is written in language that is easy for the average reader to understand with practical tips for reducing and /or eliminating depression and anxiety.The step-by-step method shows how to break long term patterns that have prevented you from getting what you really want from life - happy, healthy, loving relationships and the JOY that results from them. I have used this method in my Private Practice as a Licenced Clinical Social Worker and also in my personal life. In 20 years in this field, I have been to many types of training and read many books on depression and anxiety and I must say that this is the most powerful and effective method I have found for creating real and lasting change.

Not a huge bargain at $20 new but one of the better books out there. You will learn a ton and it is an easy read.

Smaller Book with Less Info than 4th Edition

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information. NOT SO!

The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.

The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

Getting used to it

I purchased the Nutrition Almanac, 2007 edition from Amazon.com. I bought a copy of the Nutrition Almanac over 30 years ago (1979 edition). I used it religiously over the last 30 years. It became so tattered that I finally bought a new one this year (2007 edition). Although the newer edition does have updated information in it, I am going to have to get used to the new layout. The older version was in a more bulleted type of paragraph format, making it easier to find relavent information, such as benefits of a nutrient, toxicity, and sources of the nutrient. The lump paragraph format makes it hard to find what I need. I am going to use a yellow highlighter to bold the food sources of the nutrients. What I do like much better, and the reason I rate the new version a 4-star, is that the nutrient listings for the various foods in the back of the book are much easier to read vertically, instead of horizontally like in the older version. The new Nutrition Almanac, with its bright colorful cover, looks much better than my old, tattered one. After I get used to the new format, I will probably love it as much as my old Almanac.

YOUR BEST FOOD FRIEND

I have had my Nutrition Almanac for over thirty years. This updated book gives you just about all you need to plan nutritious meals that help keep the whole family healthy and also address certain ill-health manifestations. The information is brief but very informative, and the food vitamin and mineral content indexes are terrific. For example: I know someone with a blood clotting problem in their legs. They are prescribed drugs for blood thinners; and then told if they fall and cut themselves, they might die due to loss of blood. Cauliflower contains a good portion of Vitamin K, the vitamin that assists to stop bleeding. And there is a myriad other references that can help you nutritionally. What I do is check my symptoms on the Internet; and from there chose the supplements and foods that should help me. Of course, I believe in doctors, but if you read the side-affects of almost all drugs, they are bad. So for myself, I have chosen to try and be completely prescription free - who knows, maybe I'm just cheap - but I don't want to open a medicine cabinet full of costly pills that all have bad side-affects. So I refer to my Nutrition Almanac and the Internet and so far so good.

Invaluable!!

Don't let the compactness of this book fool you. As a student of Interior Design, this little handbook is invaluable to me! The quick reference material is detailed yet concise. It has everything from basic space planning layouts to building codes. There are even notes pages at the end of each section so you can add on to your little handbook. It's like having textbooks from 5 different classes compiled in one little, easy to carry book.

Interesting!

Great little book. I love the way the CSI codes are included. The only reason that I withheld one star was because I know that some of the information is out of date. With that being said, it's great to have a little volume of facts to carry with you. Of course, check your facts (codes, pricing, etc.) and you'll be fine. Perhaps the author should come up with a subscription system in a loose-leaf jacket to keep the info. current? As an ID student, I find the book very helpful and easy to use. Quite nice - buy it!

Good buy

This is a great buy. Not very practical for day-to-day use. I prefer Hoppenfeld and Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis for a practical physical exam. And the Pocket Guide to MSK Dx is also good for history taking. But Dutton is a good buy for a reference book and has some good info in it.

This book is one of the best books i've ever read in basic histology. it's really good for medical students, Simple and straight to the point.
Every histologic feature had it's clinical correlation which is so helpful for students throughout their Predoc studies.

For a medical student, not a bad book.

One's opinion on this book depends your purpose. This is not a comprehensive histology text, nor is it an atlas of histology. Graduate students in anatomy or histology will be disappointed.

BUT, for a medical student this book used in conjunction with an atlas is pretty good. The book reads well, has "ok" pictures, and sufficient detail for medical school histology courses. I found this book used with the DiFore's histology atlas to be sufficient. I preferred this over Wheater's book, but others in my class did use the Wheater book.

Overall, I would recommend this book to be used along with a histology atlas such as DiFore, for medical school histology.

Histology is barely present on USMLE, so don't waste your time buying this book for board review unless you just can't remember anything from histology.

An easy read and a book that truly draws your interest to product searching for antiques. Lynn draws on family experience honed from many years with her grandmother who was an expert on antiques. I highly recommend this book for anyone hoping to expand their knowledge in this genre.

EXCELLENT BOOK!

I loved this book! Very easy to read and follow, very nicely laid out, and packed full of valuable information! I started right in garage-saleing on Saturday mornings, and made nearly $300 NET PROFIT in the first month! Not bad for a new ebay hobby! I couldn't have done it without this book. Absolutely FABULOUS book, and I'm having a great time practicing what I learned!
