The best advanced grammar available

I have over 20 years experience as a college teacher of Spanish and as a federally certified Spanish court interpreter and, in my opinion, this volume is without equal among Spanish grammars. What you find here is not available anywhere else: an empirical, scholarly presentation of Spanish as it is spoken throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
This is not an intermediate grammar as some reviewers have asserted. It is not a repetition of conventional grammar rules as they have been handed down for generations. There are much simpler books that explain the use of the subjunctive, the mechanics of noun-adjective agreement, verb conjugation etc.
Rather, this book describes how literate people in different countries (or regions of countries) use the language in real life. It tells you to what extent they respect the traditional academic rules of grammar, and to what extent they break them and change them. In other words, it tells you what the living rules of the language are in distinct places.
All of this is supported by copious citations from the writings of novelists, scholars, journalists, etc. making it an eminently readable book. It's very easy to pick it up to search for the answer to a specific question and end up reading for an hour because it contains so much fascinating information.
In short, it is a superb and eminently useful piece of scholarship, which belongs on the shelf of any serious student of the language.

Excelente y completo, ¡bravo!

This is the best guide by far that I've seen to Spanish grammar. It has everything in it, covering even obscure topics that other books ignore, such as the future subjunctive and the neuter ello.
What makes the book particularly interesting is that it discusses Spanish as it is actually written and spoken, not just how the grammarians would have it. And it's quite up to date, also, discussing, for example, how Spanish makes plurals of the numerous English words that have entered the vocabulary in recent years.
What is also interesting is that the book explains how the language is used in different countries. It's the first book I've seen that truly gives a feel for the differences between Spanish Castilian and Latin American Spanish (and the differences in the different varieties of Latin American Spanish). The book supports its explanations with numerous examples taken from contemporary writing throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
This book is truly an astounding resource, well worth the price.

Forced to buy it, opted to read it!

As a Spanish major in college, I didn't feel like buying any more grammar books to read since they got so damn expensive and I hardly needed to use them (they were kinda ineffective). But, little did I know would I be making an investment of a lifetime with 'A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish'. I sat down one night and, hestitantly, I opened the book...hours later, I was still reading it. I am very much into detail, and man, this book has got details! I love it now and I will never use another grammar reference guide again. So if you want to dissect the Spanish language, I throw my support to this book.

About the Author

John Wooden (1910-2010), guided the UCLA Bruins to ten NCAA basketball championships over a 12-year period, including four perfect seasons and an 88-game winning streak. He is an inspiring man with great quotes and basketball knowledge

He is an inspiring man with great quotes and basketball knowledge. I wish the book would have been more about his theory on the court and strategies. Sometimes he lost me with the names of his players, teammates, and seasons because I am young and don't remember any of those teams. However, I highly recommend the book.

Fascinating Insights Into One of Greatest Teachers

What many of us never quite realized is that Wooden was also a great player in his day; only one elected to Hall of Fame as both.

One can surmise that much of what carried him to fame at UCLA was already picked up in his early days in life, as student, son, player and then coach in high school.

His faith in the Lord and reading Bible daily was inspirational as well.

Lessons taught by him to his players were not just about b-ball, but about life. The foreward by Bill Walton exudes this, and one can see how easy it was for his players to play for him.

Great read to be re-read. Youngsters should read this.

A good text for leadership

I purchased this book as part of a Ph.D. level class as a lesson in leadership. Coach Wooden shows his ability to lead and educate through his expertise in the fundamentals and the basics. He demonstrates his ability to change tactics and styles with different individuals, which is essential in good,effective leaders. I would recommend this book on several levels. At face value, it is an exceptional story about an exceptional coach and man. At a deeper level, I think it portrays a good example of how to lead and and how to set an example for those you are trying to lead.

Rhonda Huettenmueller (Sanger, TX) has taught mathematics at the college level for over 14 years. Best purchase I have ever made!

I was lucky enough to have the writer of this book as my instructor for college alegbra. The math department here requires the course to be taught with a very poorly-written book that often jumps around and expects you to know things that it doesn't cover until later chapters, skips many steps in solving example problems expecting you to figure them out yourself, and is extremely difficult to read. I have severe adult ADD and I can rarely remember to pay attention in class and, I was struggling because not only did I find myself missing major parts of her lecture and having to fill in the gaps with the terrible required textbook and a reading disability but, it had also been 6 years since I last took any form of math. I was badly in need of a supplement and set out to my local major bookstore chain to grab some Starbucks and peruse the math books. I finally came upon Dr. Huettenmueller's book after having carefully looked through every other book in the store. All of the other books that I had found seemed to either insifficiently cover the material I was struggling with or they were very difficult to understand (very often both). I had actually given up on my search when I was walking out and happened to spot College Algebra Demystified. I didn't really have great hopes for it as all of the other books had failed me but, I figured I should at least take a quick look. As soon as I cracked it open I realized that this was the perfect book for me.

This book explains things in a very clear, logical manner. If you read the book and follow the examples that she works for you then by the time you get to the practice problems you should whizz right through them. However, even if you get stuck her explainations of the solution should get you back on track in no time. The book was extremely easy to read even for someone who normally reads at a pace of about 1 page per 13 minutes. The book is full of examples complete with graphs, equations, and and explainations that you will find easy to follow along with however, one of the greatest resources is the final exam at the end. Taking this short practice exam will very quickly help you identify anything that you have forgotten and you should be able to flip back through the book to get up to speed in only a few moments. The night before the final when it comes down to crunch time this book will save you a lot of wasted time and effort by taking you through all of the material neccesary to succede in a concise but effective manner.

So, how did I do in the class? I reviewed with this book up to the moment she started handing out the final exam. I missed only a single problem on the lengthy department final and, after miserably failed the placement exam on the first day of class, I finished the course with a magnificent A.

If you're going to buy Pre-Calculus.....

I felt this book was written with clarity.
Much of it was a review for a subject that I had studied years ago and had forgotten. Its written much better than the book I had back then.

However if you intend to purchase "Pre-Calculus" by the same author, buy that book and by-pass this book. Most of the material is duplicated in "Pre-Calculus" plus the additional material you will need for calculus.

Pre-Calculus is also a well written book.

This not a self-teaching guide

I purchased this book hoping to supplement a very cryptic college textbook. To say the least, I am very disappointed that this book does not cover in depth problem solving and fails to cover several advanced areas of college algebra. I would say the material in this book borders right below the college algebra level and really isn't written to self-teach. In other words, you need to be very familiar with algebra if you really want to make sense of the material in this book.

The book needs careful proofreading and editing.

This book contains many errors. It creates confusion and anxiety in the reader. Do not blindly believe the answers. Crosscheck it with Tintinalli's text when in doubt. Errors are noted in the answers as well as the explanations given.

About the Author

Herman Edwards has spent the past three seasons as head coach of the New York Jets. A former standout NFL player for the Philadelphia Eagles, Edwards hosts the annual Herman Edwards Football Camp for underprivileged children in Sacramento, and is the first coach from the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship to become a head coach in the NFL.

Shelley Smith is an award-winning ESPN journalist, and was a Sports Illustrated writer and reporter for eight years.

New Favorite Book!

This book deserves a lot more credit than it is recieving here. Yes, Edwards does speak a lot about periods of success from his lifetime, but I do not believe for one moment that he is doing it with any attention to boast his successes. As great a coach as he has been he does deserve some credit. Still, the book is about finding success, yes, winning. He lays out an excellent "map" to building success in life that is applicable to any situation, and he does it through the periods of a football game (before, 1st quarter, etc.). I was simply reading this for fun and ended up taking notes and quotes down throughout the whole book. This is a great help for anyone looking to improve who they are as an individual and in the direction of building success!

So far, so good. I had read that this was a "self-promoting" book by Herm Edwards. I guess I'm not sure how one can write a book about life experience they've gained without talking about ones self. I think he has insight on people skills and how to influence people. I saw a reference to John Maxwell, a leading leadership skills teacher, in his book. That tells me he's also a student of leadership skills. In my opinion, leadership can be learned, but it comes more naturally to some than others. Herm Edwards seems to be a natural...buy the book if your at all curious.

Great work with a lot of practical advice

Herm Edwards in conjunction with Shelley Smith have put together a delightful book offering many useful anecdotes and bits of advice for success in day-to-day life. The book is very easy to read and the stories are concise and accessible--easily translatable outside of the NFL world.

In some instances you would benefit from some football knowledge, however, assumedly you probably possess that given your draw to the book.

Herm's personality comes across in the writing, but is not overbearing, it is a pleasant read with a lot of suggestions and advice just about anyone can relate and benefit from a read.

In response to the 1-star reviews it appears that those writing tend have a dislike for Herm Edwards due to his coaching style or possibly his eventual departure from the Jets. Their justifications are not really sound, but rather obvious points one would pick when they were already convinced otherwise before they even opened the book. It is a shame that the solid lessons from this book were not obtained simply because of an unwillingness to like the author and thus hurting the overall book's rating.

Would highly recommend this book for everyone.

About the Author
Jerry C. Whitaker is a well-known author is the field of video, TV, HDTV, and radio, and President of Technical Press, Inc. Author and editor of numerous books on technical topics, he wrote the leading technical manual in television, The Standard Handbook of Video and Television Engineering. He is also the author of Video and Television Engineers' Field Manual; DTV: The Revolution in Digital Television; The Communications Facility Design Handbook, as well as other standard references. In 2000, he was appointed Technical Director of ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee), the international, non-profit organization charged with developing voluntary standards for digital television. A Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) and of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), he currently teaches a course at UCLA on power control and distribution. He lives in Morgan Hill, California.

About the Author

Michael L. George is the founder and CEO of George Group, the largest Lean Six Sigma consulting practice in the United States. He is the author of Lean Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma for Service.

David Rowlands is Vice President of Lean Six Sigma at Xerox Corporation. He's been using Lean and Six Sigma since 1988, and has practical experience working with teams to solve improvement challenges in sales, service, and manufacturing.

Bill Kastle is a Vice President at George Group and has helped guide Lean Six Sigma initiatives at major corporations. For 15 years, he has helped teams at all levels apply these tools to improve performance and respond to customer needs.

A Good Introduction

According to the back cover, this book is "a quick introduction to using Lean Six Sigma." Since you are looking at an introductory book, you are probably not familiar with Lean Six Sigma. The back cover again states, "Lean Six Sigma combines the two most important improvement trends of our time: making work better (using Six Sigma) and making work faster (using Lean Principles)." I believe this book accomplishes its stated goal. It's 92 pages of quick reading introduce the reader to the Lean Six Sigma improvement process through definitions, explanations and examples.

The book is divided into two parts: Foundations of Lean Six Sigma and Implementing Lean Six Sigma. The foundation section covers the four keys to Lean Six Sigma and the five laws of Lean Six Sigma. The implementation section covers how to get started, introduces the reader to tools in the Lean Six Sigma toolkit, gives a public sector example of where Lean Six Sigma was used to make improvements and what management needs to do to support a successful Lean Six Sigma effort.

A reference book on Lean Six Sigma this book is not. If you are already familiar with Lean Six Sigma, then look elsewhere for more information. If you would like an introduction to Lean Six Sigma that is both understandable and easy to read, I highly recommend this book. Having read the book, I now feel better prepared to read additional Lean Six Sigma books that will take my knowledge and understanding to greater depths.

An excellent concise yet easy to understand description of the Lean Six Sigma process. Ideal for anyone just beginning to introduce 'Lean" to their work environment or anyone who wants to quickly learn the essential principles of 'Lean'. Provides sufficient explanation on how 'Lean' and "Six Sigma" work together although their aims are different.

I highly recommend.

Cliff's Notes Version of the Extraordinary Leader

First, I love the Zenger Folkman philosophy on leadership! Second, this easy to read booklet makes it really to understand the philosophy without reading the entire The Extraordinary Leader book. Further it is great to take with you on a plane as it is small and light to carry. I heard Jack Zenger speak and WOW! Good stuff! I've read all of their books on the market. I'm a big fan!
