Best yet pronunciation guide

As an ESL teacher, I have found this to be the most affordable and effective program I have ever used with my university students and with private students as well. I do find that there are not enough practices as the booklet accompanying the CDs is just a narrow volume but the practice sections, though limited in quantity, are of excellent quality. I have found that I can supplement the practice sections with other texts. The narrator has a friendly quality to her voice and I have been repeatedly listening to the CDs with numerous students yet I am still not tired of hearing her voice. In one or two places on the CDs the narrator demonstrates "close" vowel sounds, and I cannot hear the difference because of poor production quality in a couple of spots. But, as I am following along in the text, I stop the CD and go over those few sounds with my students. In spite of this failing in one or two places on the CD, I would highly recommend this well organized and otherwise well presented program above all the others that I have used. My students have demonstrated noticeable improvement in a very short period of time and they all have mentioned that they enjoy the program and find it "very useful," easy to understand, and reasonably priced.

A Helpful Product!!!!

I have all CDS of English Pronunciations, and it seems a lot of people think that American English Training by Ann Cook is the best. That's not really true, though, because in my opinion Ann Cook more focuses on Intonation rather than teaching how to say and find the differences among words correctly. I still do like an Improve Your American English Accent by Charlie Child is better.

This is a great product to shun the foreign inveterate accent. To deal with the complete program, you must need a plethora of patience, because is really demanding. However, when you finish; you will feel great, more confident and less belligerent about your accent, because it is gone.

New Isn't Necessarily Better

This is a follow-up to Tregoe and Zimmerman's original work on strategy, Top Management Strategy: What It Is and How It Works. Incredibly, the author, who is an officer with the firm of Kepner-Tregoe, only includes Ben Tregoe as "with" instead of a co-author, and manages to make a great, clean, Occam's Razor of a concept into a convoluted detour. The crisp "driving forces" of the original book have been recombined, and not with a great deal of reasoning, and long passages are created to provide some mathematical support for issues that don't need it. It seems to me that Freedman is trying to jam in something representing his contribution to the process when he really has nothing to add. His corporate examples seem arbitrary and inserted simply to try to make the appeal more international.

The original book is one of the best anywhere on strategy with its clear definitions and seminal use of the "driving force." It's too bad it may no longer be widely available. This newer book is a poor successor and is remarkably ungracious to Ben Tregoe, who passed away a year or so ago, and was one of the great thinkers in this field. If you can get the original, do so. The two stars I've given this one are purely for what Freedman has retained of the original.

Effective Strategic Thinking

I have long believed that any organization without a cogent strategy is vulnerable. Too much strategic thinking these days is driven, in my opinion, by a desire to appeal to Wall Street investment bankers and analysts or by a dot.bomb-fueled fear of failure.
Strategy is a two-headed prong. It is creative enough to fashion a vision, while being disciplined enough to drive the vision into reality.
Mike Freedman defines the word as the �framework of choices that determine the nature and direction of an organization.� It is a definition I like. The word �framework� establishes boundaries and scope. �Choices� are about products, services, markets and capabilities. �Nature� describes the character of any organization. �Direction� is the organization�s course determined by choices about future products, services, customers and markets.
Notice that a decision is not strategic simply because it is long-term or involves mega-dollar expenditures. While these can be made within the strategic framework, only those decisions that change the framework are strategic.
Freedman says there are three critical aspects to a strategy:
1. A strategic vision is based on facts, informed assumptions and critical what-if thinking.
2. The vision must be communicated throughout the organization.
3. Its implementation must be monitored.
I particularly enjoyed the section on Strategic Master Project Planning. Freedman says the purpose of master project plan is to assess the necessary strategic initiatives, integrate the existing operation projects, identify project priority and interdict those projects which are out of line with the strategic vision.
This is a great book. As always, organizations that desire to survive and thrive will have to mast the art of strategy creation and implementation. The Kepner-Tregoe five phase model on which Freedman bases this book is a great foundation for organizations and managers who wish to begin the journey.

Good book, but it could have been better

Strategic leadership certainly requires discipline, and it clearly is an art form. But it is not as complicated as the authors would have their readers believe. Furthermore, the 5-phase model for strategy formulation and implementation that the authors claim to have developed is not unique. It's the same model just about any entrepreneur who writes a sound business plan uses to start a new business, and entrepreneurs have been around since before the authors were born.

I think the book was written adequately well, and I recommend that entrepreneurs who have read a few books on how to write a business plan read this book, too. I would have liked the book better if the authors had first described what a company founder goes through when he or she practices strategic leadership in starting his company. Then explain what the company founder (or his or her replacement) must do to monitor the strategy, renew it, or possibly change it. Then, and only then, discuss real-world examples about how it is hard to monitor strategy, renew it, or possibly change it. I did not like the way the authors sprinkled real-world examples throughout the text. I think they should have been included in a separate section of the book.

If the authors had titled the book "The Art and Discipline of Strategic Leadership at Large Multi-National Companies," then I would have rated it higher. Strategic leadership at large companies is complicated because of their size, and because their leaders are probably not all that competent at thinking strategically. It is hard to implement strategic change in something that is old and big, especially if one hasn't been at the helm for long.

Probably the most important thing I learned from reading this book is that many people enjoying the role of CEO in large multi-national businesses hire consultants to educate them on things they would already know if they had ever started their own successful small business. I would not have learned this if the authors had kept to describing strategic leadership rather than the problems large companies face regarding their strategic leadership. This book is worth a read, but it is not a masterpiece.

Great Grammar Reference Book

Since I haven't been in high school for over a year I've been wanting something to help me to refresh everything that I had learned. After hours of countless searching etc, I came across this book. I read some of the reviews on another site, and read the ones here and though I'd give it a try. It came rather quickly, and I was able to start 'studying' and refreshing everything. I was amazed, it's all completely well organized and it even focuses on the Subjunctive in a relatively good way. Although, I wish that it covered everything though in further detail. It gives good examples, but if you're someone like me, you'd love to see a specific grammar point used in detail. I'd recommend it.

Very complete -- but can be unnecessarily obscure

This French Grammar book is about the most complete book on the subject I have studied. For this reason, it is valuable. However, it is often difficult to figure out what is standard usage versus some much less common usage. This makes this book difficult to use for all except advanced students. Additionally, despite my generally pretty decent knowledge of grammar, I still find some of the grammatical terms are unnecessarily obscure and difficult to understand. Lastly, there are a handful of errors in the book -- or "examples" that are supposed to illustrate certain points that I just can't figure out how they relate to those points.

For what appears to be a very complete book (if you can put up with the obscurities) it is good. However, for an intermediate to advanced student (which is what I consider myself to be), there are better books that cover the essential material better.

At last - a good reference guide for grammar

This is an excellent guide to French grammar organized very much like a style guide. For example, conjunctions with the indicative are covered under point 179. Point 180 covers french usages of the English equivalent "after" (e.g., apres and apres que), point 181 covers French usages of the English equivalent "as" (e.g., que, comme, aussi) and so on. The structure makes reference a breeze, as opposed to flipping through grammar texts for each grammar point.

The book assumes that you already have a fair understanding of grammar and structure and only need clarification and/or fine tuning - this is not a text book for beginning French. Each entry has a brief but reasonably thorough explanation and several examples. There is an extensive index, a section of problem words/phrases, several exercises and an answer key.

Good Advice

This is a fascinating book, with plenty of good advice for investing in rental properties and learning to live off the income produced by your investments. Schaub talks about finding deals, negotiating for better terms, using agents, managing your properties, and protecting your key assets. The paragraphs below briefly discuss three of his key points.

Schaub's chapter on learning how to work yourself out of your day job hit home with me. Isn't this a goal we all share? Schaub's plan is easy to understand, but not necessarily easy to follow. In my action plans, I first wanted to be able to pay my electric bill with income that had spun off my investments. After reaching that goal, I wanted to pay my phone bill, car insurance, etc. I kept working to build investment income sufficient to pay my bills. Eventually, I reached a point where my investment income has almost equaled my work income. I'm using the bulk of my work income to make investments. Schaub suggests using your investment income to replace your need to work. I suggest you keep working, and use you work income to make bigger investments.

Schaub's entire thesis rests on the concept of buying quality properties that you manage and control, and striving to pay them off within a ten-year period. When you approach retirement, theoretically you will have the income of these properties flowing into your bank account. This is a great idea, and certainly doable; however, maintenance, tax, and insurance expenses will never go away. So don't forget that maintenance alone may eat up to 40% of your gross income. Insurance and taxes will eat another 10-20%.

Schaub talks about owning property out of town, and this is important info for all investors. Your main concern is control. I learned my lesson the hard way here. I owned a home free and clear in a different state. However, my property manager seen to it that every month I had a significant maintenance costs, such as $325 for removal of used stove. $459 for removal of tree roots from pipes under house. Month after month I put up with these outrageous costs, that I would have handled for pennies if the home was within a hour's drive of my home.

Schaub suggests you Focus on making small deals that you can understand and control. For example, a small investor can earn sufficient returns from several single-family homes in good neighborhoods, without having to negotiate for malls and apartment complexes, or get over your head in partnerships and complex land development deals.

You may also want to read "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth" by Phillip Collinsworth.

An excellent book on the qualitative aspects of real estate investing.

John Schaub has written an excellent book on the qualitative aspects of real estate investing. It doesn't deal much with the important mathematical aspects of estimating your projected return on investment. Instead, it deals with what types of real estate investments provide the best return with the least amount of work, what type of investing strategy to use, and how to find good deals. He advocates a long-term buy-and-hold approach instead of short-term flipping. John Schaub's approach to real estate is very similar to Warren Buffett's approach to stocks: buy low and hold for a long time.

It seems that most real estate investing books are get-rich-quick schemes aimed at the ignorant, gullible, and desperate. This is one of the few good books. I highly recommend this book, but it should not be the only book you read before beginning investing. A good companion book would be Investing in Real Estate by Andrew McLean and Gary Eldred.

By the way, the review by John Matlock "Gunny" is fake. If you read lots of Amazon.com reviews, you'll see him around a lot. Check his review history. He reviews more books than any human could possibly read, and he only writes 5 star reviews, so he is probably a reviewer paid by the publisher.

Definitely a keeper

I like this book. The author offers advice and strategies that I believe I can make work for me in the real world. There was nothing that I read in the book that I would feel strange or wrong about doing. In fact, I'm looking into making an offer using his methods.

The only conflict for me was that John recommends investing in your own area. He doesn't seem fond of investing out of town. I live in Southern California, and unless you are make large cash down payments, it's nearly impossible to be cash flow positive for a very long time. I'm going to adapt the information in the book and continue to invest out of town.

I'm definitely adding this to my investment book library. It's a keeper.

Common Sense Approach to Channel Design

I bought this book to clarify information presented in my college channel and distribution textbook. Was I glad I did! The book presented channel and distribtution design in a clear, concise manner. The language is easy to understand and there are many illustrations to guide the new learner. I gained an understanding of this strategic topic quickly. This book should be a recommended supplemental book for introductory channel design classes!

If you are involved in or manage an indirect or direct sales organization I would suggest this book to you. It is not a traditional sales self help book, it is organized and extremely illustrative when it come to planning, setting up and managing a distribution network.

Great For Newbies!

This book is a great book for beginners. I am trying to learn about Earth Science and this book is great! I like that I can quiz myself and, in needed, review what I need to work on. The best part of all: I can learn at my own pace! The only thing is there is is misprint in this book. It says that Mount St. Helens in in Oregon. Nope. It's in Washington State! OOPS! But none-the-less, a great book! I have also read other books in this series. Alternitave Energy, Enviromental Science, & Meterology. All are excellent! Great for self-study!

A Great Way to Explore Science

This is a great book for an adult to get reacquainted with science. The writing is first-rate and easy to understand. Science has changed a lot since I was in school and I feel a lot more current about the world in which I live and how it functions thanks to this book. This book is a must-have for anyone, young or old, who isn't an expert in science but values or has a need to know. Good writing, helpful sidebars, and I passed most of the tests! Nice work, Dr. Williams.

Root families: Another easy way to expand your vocabulary is to become familiar with related word families that have the same root. This section contains 14,000 terms grouped into 2,200 root categories.

A great tool for systematically improving your vocabulary

Trying to increase your Spanish vocabulary? Do you favor a logical approach that improves your understanding of how the language works? Not sure where to start? This book might be what you're looking for. It is organized into four major sections:

ROOT DICTIONARY: contains over 14,000 words organized by root. Each root and associated word includes a brief definition. Grouping words by root makes the relationship between words readily apparent, and makes it easy to learn and remember new variants. For example, the root "bajo" lists 23 words formed from it, including: abarjarse, bajar, rebajar, bajo, bajeza, bajista (bass player!), abajo, cabizbajo, etc, all of which relate to some low thing, act, or condition. Each derived word also shows its frequency-of-use, if it happens to be among the top 5000. Of the bajo-derived words, bajar, bajarse, bajo, and abajo are all commonly used... being in the top 1800. This makes it easier to sharpen one's focus.

SPANISH FREQUENCY TABLE: actually a dictionary with headwords ordered by frequency-of-use. Each headword is followed by fairly complete definitions and examples. Like English, most of the Top-40 words are articles, adverbs, conjunctions, and pronouns. The top verbs are haber(18), tener(21), estar(22), hacer(24), fue(25... yes, it includes conjugated forms of verbs as well as the infinitives), poder(26), decir(28), dar(37), deber(43). Again, a useful tool for someone who wishes to prioritize their study.

THESAURUS OF SPANISH COGNATES: begins with more than 100 high-frequency Spanish-English cognates, and then groups thousands of cognates by category, much like a standard thesaurus.

GUIDE TO SPANISH SUFFIXES: another useful way to study cognates.

Overall I think the book is a terrific tool for anyone who is interested in learning more about the language, while improving vocabulary.

A well-thought out aid to increasing vocabulary

I already had several vocab books before I bought this one. I think this is my most useful one yet. It would be great for one section alone - one which gives you the 5,000 most commonly used words in a Mexican newspaper. I used to find it very difficult choosing which words to select for my daily increase in vocabulary. I always had to think, "Would they use that word much?" Now I don't have to think about that. I am simply working my way through the 5,000. What is encouraging is I have started reading Spanish newspapers, and lo and behold, a word I have just tried to learn the day before, is there in print. That Spanish word, for example, for "bird bath" that I got from elsewhere, never seems to appear!

Also I use the roots section of the book to see if my new words have similar words in common. This helps to remember more vocab.

Another section looks at the endings of words, and how you can get a feel for the language from them. It looks very useful and is written by Dorothy Richmond who has written a couple of other Spanish language-learning books that I have.

Finally there is a massive dictionary of cognates which I will get into when I have got my 5,000 words, and there is a good index at the back linking to the different dictionaries the book is comprised of.

All in all, my favourite book for improving my Spanish vocabulary.

Interesting but..

I think this is a super interesting idea for a book and provides a great deal of useful information. Unfortunately, it also contains a large number of errors - especially in the section with the top 5000 words. Some definitions are simply wrong (e.g. cocer is "to cook" not "to sew" - coser is "to sew") But, there are lots of mistakes in this section. So, ¡Ten cuidado!
