Up or round for your swing? You decide!

Interesting approach to the swing. Mr. Hardy lays out the specifics and details for each type of swing, be it upright or more rounded. He also discuss the elements in each swing type, and what works with each, and what does not. Mr. Hardy is not dogmatic about which swing to use, but he does stress that the elements from the two swings should not be intermingled. Bad things result! An example of this would be the up and down arm motion for an upright swing will not work with the rounded swing. I'm working on moving to a flatter one plane swing, for more consistent shot making. The two plane swing is great when it is on, but ouch! when it is off. Sadly, Mr. Hardy does not work directly with non-pros, so he doesn't have a school you can go to. I would have given the book five stars, but it could use some more examples/drills on how to ingrain working on the swing. The pictures are adequate for demostrating the different types of swings. (I believe that Mr. Hardy is writing another book on this same topic. It would be interesting to find out how long a pro takes to make these type of swing changes. Golf is one of the few sports where the amateur thinks they can play like a pro!)

Really worthwhile

This book provides very good instruction with a general theory of the golf swing that is easy to keep in your head. I had already been paying enough attention to my swing mechanics to see that I was closer to the one-plane swing. This book filled in the gaps and has me on the road to a more consistent swing.

As Mr. Hardy notes, the one-plane swing really does have fewer moving parts. There is just a lot less to think about. The latest key piece I discovered is having my left arm rotate clockwise (Hardy uses the word "pronate") on the back swing. I read those words but only got the "feel" of that by accident on the golf course. Once that happened, I reread the backswing chapter and it made sense, for me at least. The main mistake I make now is occassionally topping the ball, which I can quickly correct because Hardy has pointed out that in the one-plane swing you do not want to be straightening up on the downswing. If anything, he says, you want to be bending over slightly more as you make contact. (I believe I am accurately representing these little "tidbits" but double-check for yourself.)

Anyways, the main criticism of the book probably lies with the editors and publisher. There are enough "geometric" terms (planes, angles, etc.) that additional illustrations would be helpful. Also, the color photos of Peter Jacobson demonstrating both swings should be redone in parallel sequences for easier comparison.

I would also recommend Jeff Peshut's little book "Golf's Timeless Fundamentals", which I became aware of when reading his review of another golf book. He ties the key to a good golf swing to the motion of a pendulum. The "one-two", "three-four" swing thought really helps, especially on short chips and when putting. His explanation of a tempo tied to the pendulum that each person uniquely creates has also been enlightening for me.

Together both books cost around $20 with shipping and I'd say represent an excellent value.

I must also agree with another reviewer that Hardy's book probably sets a new standard, though I am no real judge of golf instruction. I would have to think that anyone who reads Hardy will be asking his or her next instructor whether they teach "one-plane", "two-plane" or both.

Plane Truth for Golfers

I am a good athletic player who shoots in the 80s regularly and whose game had reached a stalemate. This book has helped me tremendously. I am a one planer and the book explains exactly what you need to do. Jim does a good job of telling you the few fundamentals that are a "must" for each swing. He is also very clear that it is OK to be a little "off"- he is giving the optimum requirements for each swing, and he concedes that even good players will deviate slightly at times- this is fine. Overall a great book and easy to understand. I used to have back pain after playing, but not with these changes! I highly recommend the DVDs as well.

Moderately good

This book is good for Labview intermediate programmers. It sort of seems hard for a beginner. It does not go into great depths and tricks of programming in labview. if you are in the learning curve this books adds more to that. It is very limited in certain aspects, like real time programming, and does not explain much about DAQ mx. This book is great for people as reference but I guess there lots more to be added.

It did help me intially as I got into more programming, it would not help me.

Needs more basic information on LABVIEW, and less chat.

I recently needed to get into Labview and so bought this book; and was disappointed. I would not describe the book as practical - a practical book is succinct, and provides the essential information the reader needs to understand the subject. The book is too chatty and long-winded; the author keeps 'beating around the bush' rather than clearly presenting the basics of Labview. When will authors realise that practical books on software packages need to contain NUMEROUS SIMPLE EXAMPLES, with each element of the program fully explained in the text? By proving this, the author helps the reader to understand how the software functions, and enables them to build up their own applications in a modular fashion. Unfortunately, rather than providing this, 'Labview Graphical Programming' frustrates the reader by forcing them to wade through hundred of pages on topics such as the development history and the intricacies of the functionality of Labview. It might be of use to a person who is already familiar with Labview and is currently using it.

Great Book, Especially for the Working Person

For those of you who do not have this book, this book is one of the top Labview books available. It goes very quickly through the basics, and focuses more on building actual applications in Labview. Many pointers on how to maximize resources are through out this book. It saved me many hours of trial and error. The book reads as if an articulate person is speaking to you. Very no nonsense.
For example, there's a comprehensive chapter on actually developing a Labview VI for use. It goes through the requirements, the development (internally and also the user interface) and the release of the VI. Further, it has a nice section on DAQ.
This book is more or less a rehash of the old book, with some upgrades, but for those who don't have the old one, read it's reviews. I wasn't terribly disappointed with the omission of Labview 6i stuff, since the content extended beyond it. You'll be making a good investment in this book.

A nutritionist and the author of 20 books on health and healing, Gittleman here offers a companion cookbook to her best-selling The Fat Flush Plan. The three-phase plan calls for a strict avoidance of white rice, white flour, salt and sugar (Gittleman prefers Stevia Plus when she simply can't avoid sweetness) and the embrace of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The 200-plus recipes include dishes for each of the plan's phases (which will mean nothing to readers who don't own the original volume), from breakfasts to snacks to desserts. While the fat flush philosophy seems commonsensical, the plan itself is rigid, if not downright draconian, and the puritanical zeal with which Gittleman expounds upon fat-flushing may begin to grate on any but the truest converts. Half a grapefruit, broiled with 1 teaspoon of honey, is a "special occasions" snack, flaxseeds are everywhere and Fragrant Fat Flush Meatballs use cauliflower in place of breadcrumbs: for a foodie, this is some dispiriting stuff. Nevertheless, while the utter lack of salt does her recipes some disservice (in Phase 3 recipes, there is occasional permission for "salt to taste"), Gittleman's reliance on fresh herbs, which she cites for various healing powers, wholesome ingredients and easy cooking techniques makes her cookbook worth a look for those serious about making big diet changes.

The Diet + The Cookbook = Real Weightloss!

I started the Fat Flush Diet Plan less than 30 days ago and am happy to report a weight loss of 27lbs. in that short time frame! This cookbook is essential if you wish to follow the Fat Flush Plan! This diet is not totally easy if you really value the addition of salt or butter, but really effective! Flax oil is a primary ingredient and I believe it does promote weight loss in addition to many other health benefits, but it is not at all tasty, in my opinion. Try the mock mashed potatoes, using a cauliflower puree and several of the breakfast suggestions (eggs are vital to success), plus the smoothie recipes and you will lose weight and (most importantly, inches) in a short period of time! This book contains many delicious and health smart recipes, using ingredients you may previously have discounted, and the diet plan works. After a month on the plan, I craved salt on my entrees more than anything else, but I did lose a great deal of weight and inches and truly recommend the diet plan and cookbook to anyone committed to real weight loss and helpful insights to healthy eating.

Loved the diet, but HATED the cookbook

Let me start by saying that the diet works. I lost 40 lbs over three years ago, I feel great and I look great. The cookbook is one of the worst cookbooks I have ever bought. A few of the recipes are good, but most were dreadful. Titles like "Cauliflower and Peas in Yogurt" and "Brussel Sprouts With Curry" are about as tasty as they sound. It's the only cookbook I have used where I have baked an entire dinner only to throw it away. It's happened a few times, so now I don't use this book. Look elsewhere for good, low glycemic-index recipes using non-processed food and flax oil....

Does anyone edit books anymore?

Having tried the Fat Flush Plan successfully, I was excited to buy the Fat Flush Cookbook. What a disappointment! The chapters that describe the plan are not coherent, and the information contradicts and repeats itself. In several places, Gittelman refers you to Chapter 14 for information on tools and resources. However, Chapter 14 (with a different title than the references) includes none of the tools and seems to be a sales description for the company selling her vitamin package. Also the recipes need editing to confirm the right ingredients are listed and to make sure the recipe correctly describes what to do with ALL of the ingredients.
Some recipes are good, such as the mashed potates substitutes from cauliflower and some quick soups. However, I already had those recipes from another book and the web site. The new recipes I tried were a waste of time and tasted awful. Two cloves of garlic in 4 salmon cakes certainly eliminates the fish taste! The recipe for marinated shrimp involves lots of chopped vegetables for a marinade that you apparently throw away. I can get the same taste with the herbs in a crab boil mix and save an hour. And the recipe for "carrots and snow peas with parsley" is described at the top as being a great basil-flavored vegetable.
This book was obviously written in a hurry to hit the market while interest in the Fat Flush Plan is peaking.

A Book for Those Who Need Somewhat More Careful Explanations

I have been trading my own account for a while and got interested in trying to make a few options trades. I went looking for a book so that I could review the basics. I found one book which basically said, "Here is how these terms are defined, and here are some formulas which employ these terms and here are some examples." Well, that left me cold, because the author of that book made no attempt to make sure that I really understood the basic concepts. I "kind of" understood, but not really.

"All About Derivatives" by Michael Durbin is totally different. You can tell from the way he goes about explaining things that he really wants you to understand the basic concepts, and he doesn't want you to feel "dumb" just because he brings it down to a pretty basic level from time to time. What he's trying to do is make sure you don't get tripped up on important concepts at the early stages and he really does bend over backwards to clarify things to a very great degree. Whereas it was pointless to try to work my way through the first book, I read "All About Derivatives" pretty much from cover to cover and I think there were only a few places where I still got stuck. Still, that's a vast improvement over the other book and in fact it was only after reading Durbin's book that I was able to make sense of the first one.

Some people try too hard to impress you with how academic their approach is. Michael Durbin doesn't play that game. He really wants you to understand the concepts and I think that if he needed to do cartwheels to get the point across he would do it.

I wish this guy had written my calculus textbook when I took it in college; I wouldn't have had to take it over to improve my grade.

I hope Durbin makes enough money in the derivatives game to retire and write full time. He's quite a talent.

An Excellent Introduction to Derivatives

This is an extremely well-written introduction to derivatives. I used it as a supplement to a graduate course in Risk Management which had assigned Don Chase's classic book. I found this book to be much more readable, with less formal notation and fewer equations to wade through (not to mention being much cheaper and easier to carry around). Despite its small size, it still manages to convey the essential characteristics of the major types of derivatives (forwards, futures, swaps, options, and credit derivatives) and how they are priced, without getting bogged down in excessive theory. It's written in a pleasant, conversational style, with (horrors!) even a dash of humor thrown in. It contains the right amount of detail and math in the main text, with a series of appendices and nicely separated subsections for the more mathematically inclined. It's a great introductory text, and I strongly recommend it for anyone starting out in the subject.

The Book is OK, But Not That Great.

I picked up this book for two reasons. I wanted to learn what derivatives are, and I wanted to learn about the math around them. At first glance, in the bookstore, it looked like this book would meet my needs. Now, I have to say that this the first book I ever read about derivatives and have nothing to compare it against.

The first few chapters do a good job explaining what derivatives are and how they are used, though I found the chapter on swaps somewhat confusing despite reading that chapter twice. Additionally, I found the conversational nature of his writing, and the frequent drift into sidebar discussions, quite distracting. The chapters on pricing derivatives were worse.

In the pricing chapters I found the basic explanations ok, but there are a number of errors and typos that make those chapters confusing. The author also changes terminology occasionally and that is a little confusing. At one point I emailed the author in order to clear up my confusion, and he directed me to the errata list on his web site. I found I had to read the section on the Black-Scholes model backwards because the second half of that section gave me what I needed to understand the first half.

I found the explanation of the math most frustrating. The equations use symbols to mean something different than I would expect based on how those symbols are used in math and science texts. For example, he uses Greek delta to mean "amount of" instead of "change in." Now, perhaps this is the standard usage in the financial field, but that isn't explained very well. In many cases the author does not explain what the terms in the equations are, where their values come from, or what they are measuring. More explanation here would go a long way in helping the reader to understand the math better.

In summary, like my headline says, the book is ok, but not that great. Perhaps other books on the subject are very bad, but I would advise reviewing other texts for a bit before buying this one.

Valuable for any aviation enthusiast

101 Best Aviation Attractions is a great book for aviation enthusiasts.
The book lists different aviations attractions and museums throughout the world. It has information about the event itself, in addition to hotel and other important information.
The only downside to the book is that it lacks an index of the location of ach item. An index of all attractions on a state-by-state basis would add a lot of value.
Other than that, this is a great guide for finding the best aviation events and attractions throughout the world.

Yeou-Koung Tung, Ph.D., is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The author of numerous technical papers on hydrology and risk analysis, he received his B.S. in Hydraulic Engineering from Tamkang University, Taiwan and his M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Ben-Chie Yen, Ph.D., (deceased) was a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He held a B.S. in civil engineering from National Taiwan University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Iowa. He worked with surface water and urban hydrology problems, risk and reliability analysis, and open channel and river hydraulics for more than 30 years, and was the author of over 200 published technical papers and co-author of eight books.

About the Author

Mark Lester (Cheney, WA) is an experienced grammarian, ESL expert, and professor emeritus of Eastern Washington University. He was the founding chair of the ESL department at the University of Hawaii, which is now considered one of the best ESL programs in the United States. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including Grammar and Usage in the Classroom, one of the most widely used college grammar textbooks in the country.

Larry Beason (Mobile, AL) is an award-winning professor and director of the English composition program at the University of South Alabama. He has written numerous academic articles and given presentations on rhetoric, grammar, business communication, teaching, and the English language. Beaton is also the author of several grammar books.

Exactly what I was looking for

As someone who managed to avoid learning anything in 12 years of English classes ("I already speak it, why do I need to waste my time in these classes"), I'd been bitten in the butt by my inability to clearly and concisely express myself. This was particularly embarrassing and troublesome at work when sending emails to superiors or presenting projects to a group.

I needed to learn how to properly write a sentence, and to do this, I needed to learn grammar. My search for the perfect grammar book was tough. Most were meant for readers who already had a moderate understanding of grammar. The rest seemed to be meant for ESL students. NONE seemed to offer what I needed: A foundational review of the basic concepts of grammar, and instructions on how to use these concepts to create clear and concise writings.

Finally I found this book, and it was exactly what I needed. I now have a more in-depth understanding of grammar than most of my coworkers, and though my writing may not be quite as good as theirs, it has improved and continues to do so.

As a final note, I should mention that this booked helped me only because I was very motivated to improve my writing. I have read each chapter multiple times, and practiced what I read by parsing sentences in the newspaper. And though my writing is much improved, I still spend quite a bit of time reviewing everything I write, making sure it follows the rules this book has taught me; however, with continued practice I expect that proper writing will eventually come with ease.

this is a car which drives well on the right road, but make sure this isn't the only car in your garage

Broadly speaking, this is an excellent handbook, a superb handbook. The concepts are explained clearly and the examples are very instructive. What is in the handbook is treated very lucidly and thoroughly and with considerable depth. I personally was impressed at the depth and detail in which some of the grammar is covered.

The only real problems with the handbook don't concern what is in the book--it's what isn't. There are nuances in subject-verb agreement which aren't included, areas such as impersonal expressions are absent, and there is no mention of the subjunctive. If one is preparing for the TOEFL, this is a good book to get but I would not make it the only text you study, since it is not exhaustive by any means.

Still, there is a good amount of very useful information excellently explained here. I would offer a warm qualified recommendation to ESL students, one a bit nuanced. For the ESL student with absolutely no interest in the subject, who feels that study of English in general is one big long painful injection in the gluteus maximus, a tortuous experience only to be endured and not enjoyed in any way, this book is going to come off nebulous and long-winded. Granted, the book does not give one simply the bare bones of a concept and leave enough alone; for the student who wants merely to ratchet together enough knowledge to pass a few tests and move on, this book might be a bit too dedicated to its subject material. For the student with some real interest in learning English and learning it well, however, this book definitely rewards a patient and attentive reader because ideas are not merely presented but amply explained, and in handsome detail. If one is preparing for the TOEFL, be sure to buy the TOEFL preparation book by Barron's, which will explain a host of tricks presented on the test but which are notably absent in this book. This book is excellent for the concepts it covers, but it doesn't cover enough for the testtaker, so be sure to purchase other sources for your test preparation.

a very clear, useful, and--almost--painless guide to English grammar for everybody

This book contains a great deal of the material that was in Lester's magnum opus, Grammar and Usage in the Classroom (2nd Edition). How I adored that book!, and I have lingering bitterness that it was never reissued in another printing. The previous book casts a long shadow on this one, since it draws so heavily on it with the same format, section material, and even the same example sentences.

A good book review discusses a book's purpose and whether it achieves it, the intended audience, and so forth. The best thing to do is to let this book speak for itself. This is from the Introduction:

"Grammar books are commonplace. What makes this one different? Following are seven features that set this book apart:
*separating grammar and usage: Part I focuses on the grammatical terminology used to describe language. Part II goes a step further by covering the rules and conventions--the "prescriptions" for proper language, or what you should and should not do in formal communication. Rather than conflate these two issues (description versus prescription), this book separates them so readers can pay attention to the parts that matter most to them.
*A nontechnical approach: You do not have to be a grammarian or linguist to use this book. Part I covers the technical aspects of grammar, but we assume our readers do not necessarily have a background in this area. More importantly, Part II does not rely on Part I or on previous knowledge of formal grammar.
*Accessible, bottom-line information: Part II in particular offers bottom-line definitions, hints, and rules that summarize the least you need to know about grammar and usage.
*More than just the bottom line: Most reference books on grammar stop with the bottom-line rules and with maybe an example or two. The problem is that almost every grammar rule is not self-explanatory. If it were, you would not need a book on grammar at this point in your life. Unlike most reference books on grammar, ours gives a thorough explanation so that you can better understand the rules, exceptions, and methods for correcting an error. Our goal is for you to know how to avoid problems so you will not need this or any other grammar book later. Thus, we provide enough information so you can truly understand and learn.
*A focus on the most important aspects of grammar and usage: To avoid overwhelming our readers, this book focuses on what matters the most. Neither Part I nor Part II covers every aspect of formal English. Instead, Part I deals with the grammatical terminology and information that are most useful and common. Part II deals with the most serious or most frequent errors in formal English.
*Clearly marked examples of correct and incorrect sentences: People learn more from examples, so we include plenty. But research indicates that many people who are given incorrect examples only remember how to create these errors. Often readers do not know that the examples are actually incorrect, or they only remember seeing mistakes, meaning all they learn is how to commit an error. In this book we clearly mark errors (with an X); other examples are correct. We attempt to include at least as many correct examples are errors.
*A focus on traditional grammar with insights from modern approaches: In school the most common approach to grammar is a traditional scheme based on certain parts of speech, functions, and definitions that, as a whole, are standard throughout the English-speaking world. Our book uses this system as a basis. However, along the way we draw on insights from other theories of grammar and language. For example, Part II is largely based on the notion that people use intuitive tips that tell them if they are putting a sentence together properly. This notion builds on modern grammatical theories that assume people learn a language by subconsciously drawing on particular tests and procedures. In other words, our book describes English in ways that might sound familiar to those who studied grammar in school, but we also draw on more recent perspectives of how people naturally learn and improve their language skills."

While the book uses traditional grammar as a launching point, the usage tests throughout the text are clearly from Chomsky's Transformational Grammar, and they're wonderfully useful. Here's one small example from the book:
The Pair Test: if you can pair up a modifying word with a noun, then that word is an adjective.

example phrase: that absolutely dreadful old man
that man
X absolutely man
dreadful man
old man

By drawing on one's innate sense of what sounds good together and which combinations sound weird, the native speaker of English will know from this test that "absolutely" is not an adjective and it can't be paired with a noun, all without needing the grammatical terminology to describe it. This book (and its predecessor) does a terrific job in helping the reader to determine where the errors are so they can be fixed quickly without getting bogged down in technical jargon. The usage tests rely on native English speakers' subconscious absorption of grammar rules, and because of this, this book, while it may be useful in many regards, isn't intended for ESL students or TOEFL study. Instead, ESL students and tutors should take a look at Lester's McGraw-Hill's Essential ESL Grammar: A Handbook for Intermediate and Advanced ESL Students (McGraw-Hill ESL References) .

The glossary in Part II is VERY useful for defining concepts quickly, and the index is pretty thorough and reliable. You gotta love a good index; it's indispensable.

I try to be aware of what the author intends the book to do versus what I want it to do and not to confuse the two. The authors want Handbook of English Grammar and Usage to be a reference guide that teaches the reader so well that he or she will no longer need the book. That's a laudable goal, but I think in this case the best way to do that is to include exercises for the reader to work his or her way through to test understanding of the concepts (as Grammar and Usage in the Classroom does). Lester wrote English Grammar Drills , and I wonder if it wasn't meant as a companion volume to this one. Yes, this book does omit certain topics such as the subjunctive, but the aim is to cover the most important aspects of grammar. Most high school and college students or business people aren't struggling with that. Be that as it may, I suggest one look elsewhere to learn about using the subjunctive. ; - )

McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage is a very useful, accessible, affordable, insightful (and at times funny) book for the beginner or someone who needs to brush up on grammar skills. It's one of the very best you'll find at this level.
