Best practical guide in project management and business analysis

I'm a project management 'bookaholic' as I buy a few dozen project management books every year. However, I just briefly skim most of them or read a fw chapters and they soon end up in the storage room. Only few books remain on my desk for any long period. 'The Business Savvy Project Manager' is the one of them. And there is a reason for this. This
is not an ordinary project management book, which in most cases are very similar to each other. 'The Business Savvy Project Manager' is probably the best practical guide I have read for managing organizational business on all levels: starting at projects and reaching the enterprise level.

What I especially like about 'The Business Savvy Project Manager' is the strong focus on portfolio management and project economics. While, the book on only describes the basics of discounted cash flow methodology, it provides practical guidelines for modeling project cash flows. Economic analysis and financial metrics are the foundations of successful project management and the book explains how to enable these approaches for
your project.

Another important area of project management, which is very close to my heart, is project decision analysis and risk management. The author explains sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, decision tree analysis, and other risk and decision analysis methods that enable project managers to make better choices. How many times do senior managers ask us to write a business case and how many times so we wondering if we are doing it right? The Savvy Project Manager includes clear guidelines for preparing a project business case.

Finally, I'm a strong believer that project management is not only about soft skills, although it is very important. Project management implies strong understanding of economics, decision and risk analysis, metrics and quantitative analysis, and portfolio management. I use Gary's book as a text and as the basis for much of what I teach to my clients and students.

Excellent Guide for Project Managers

This book by Gary Heerkens is an excellent guide in tying together key elements of a financial manager and a project manager. The value of this book is hard to quantify as project managers need a deep understanding of how the project ties into the overall strategy of their company and how the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow will be impacted. With this knowledge the project may be run more efficiently and with the best interests of the owners in mind (i.e. providing the best return for shareholders and stakeholders).

Some key chapters are Cost Management in Organizations, Project Economics (three parts or chapters), Risk Management Decision Making and Business, Business Cases and Business Case Preparation. In addition, the glossary in the back is a nice tool with some good references.

Understanding this book will allow project managers and engineers to present strong business cases and speak more competently to financial managers and executives. Plus, you will be able to report out with cash flow numbers, how you improved the balance sheet and income statement, along with the impact on other critical metrics. This definitely will be a book that will be kept at arm's length and referred to many times. I recommend also "What the Best MBA's Know" by Peter Navarro.

The most USED book I own!

While caring for an active population, I find this book invaluable. The organization is excellent and easy to reference. Concise diagnostic modalities and treatment protocols that are up to date and practical. Many illustrations and diagrams to aid in the diagnosis and treatment. Overall an excellent reference guide for any primary care provider.

Emergency Orthopedics

I am a PA in an ED and this book is invaluable, although I did an ortho rotation this book gives the current thoughts/treatment modalities for injuries. I have found that it deliniates what needs surgery now vs. in the near future or what can be splinted and follow up. (That is always the tough thing to figure out without experience.) This is an easy read and great from the beginning up to advanced ortho. It is well organized and goes by sections of the extremities (upper arm vs lower arm, hands then fingers). It has helpful sections on MRI, CT and other basic radiology studies for ortho purposes. Well worth the money!

Best stats book out there without the errors of the 6th edition

The quickest, most accurate stats book out there. Warning: you must read it carefully, you can't really skim. That said, if you do read it carefully, even just the first few chapters, you will truly understand basic stats. Before reading this I didn't get significance or what a t-test really meant. Now I can speak the lingo and critically assess other authors work. Just a great book if you give it a few hours to sink in.

Get the 5th edition, not the 6th, for some reason the 6th is full of typos and errors in the examples.

Horrifying Errors

Unfortunately, this book is filled with typos and mathematical errors, including the solutions section. A maths book clearly fails by letting its readers down and results in significant time loss when any errors exist in the solutions section, believe me. Some are even as basic as addition and subtraction errors in formulating solutions tables. The errors are otherwise just about acceptable in the standard text.

Whilst it reads well in parts, its strengths come from the examples provided, which relate to real life clinical trials and data. However, despite my relatively decent mathematical background, derivations sometimes suddenly lead to a formula or solution out of the blue. The text unfortunately does so in parts too leaving out the systematic approach to the explanation.

I guess you can't have both a true mathematical guide with such clinical emphasis, but for me, the typos just destroy it.

Without these irritating errors, the strengths of the book really would have been something to rate this book highly for.

Seriously beware. Needs to be pulled of bookshelves in this current state. Sorry.

An excellent introduction

This book provides an introduction to the field of risk management for readers who do not yet want to get deeply involved in the mathematical formalism that is typically used. The authors wrote the book so that it is "accessible to everyone", and they have done a fine job. Those readers who need a more quantitative treatment will have to consult another book or the vast research literature on the subject. Risk management, as they see it, is an attempt to estimate both the `expected' losses and the `unexpected' losses, and being able to differentiate between these two concepts goes to the core of the subject. Thus the book emphasizes the "intuition" behind risk management, and not the formalism. However, one must not conclude from this that "intuition" and "formalism" are distinct, and the belief that they are has resulted in a lot of confusion (and financial losses) in recent years. The authors clearly do not believe that they are, but have merely emphasized "intuition" from a pedagogical point of view.

The authors classify risk into eight categories, namely market, credit, liquidity, operational, legal and regulatory, business, strategic, and reputation risk. Financial risk, as they see it, is composed of two of these, namely market and credit risk. Their discussion of corporate risk management is very interesting, in that it begins with the observation first made almost forty years ago that the value of a firm is not altered solely by financial transactions. This is due to their assumption of the perfect market hypothesis, which effectively suppresses the ability of the firm to gain significant advantages over an individual investor. Therefore with this assumption a firm should not concern itself with risks outside of the ones that all other firms face. This is an interesting conclusion, particularly in the context of using hedging via derivatives, as it implies that it cannot compete with ordinary self-insurance, due to the presence of transaction costs. The authors discuss in fair detail why the perfect market assumption is faulty, and therefore why managing risk with hedging is a viable strategy.

The regulatory environment, particularly in the banking industry, has enormous ramifications for risk management, as the authors discuss in the book. This is due in part to the Basel Accords of 1988 and 1996, and Basel II which is due to be in place at the end of 2007. The Basel accords are essentially a standardization for capital reserves, defining a `assets-to-capital' multiple and a `risk-based capital' ratio. The authors review the 1988 Accord and discuss the elementary relationships involved, including the `Cooke ratio' and how to obtain the credit equivalent for the off-balance-sheet exposures. They also discuss the reasons for the 1996 amendment, which essentially were the result of the new trading activities that banks were indulging themselves in. It would have been interesting if the authors had included a (historical) discussion on the efficacy of the Basel Accords in suppressing banking failures. They do mention the fiasco with Barings Bank, claiming that its demise would have been adverted if it were prohibited from racking up huge exchange-traded futures positions. This is certainly true, but any regulation needs to be validated by historical data, to the extent that this is possible, and this requires of course tracking of the financial institutions that are under the umbrella of the regulation. In this regard though, the authors do view bank regulation as a `research lab' for risk management, implying that they are aware of the need for validation of any regulations that are actually put in place. It will be fascinating therefore to see the impact of the new Basel II accords when they become active, and indeed observe, if possible, any `regulatory arbitrage' that occurs. This also brings up the question of how to assess the quality of the risk management strategies of a particular financial institution. The authors spend a little time discussing this, with one of them referring to a method analogous to credit scoring.

No book on risk management could be complete without discussion of academic research on the topic, for the reason that much of this research has found practical application and has greatly influenced portfolio management and risk valuation. The authors review four theoretical models, namely modern portfolio theory, the capital asset pricing model, the Black-Scholes option-pricing model, and the Modigliani-Miller theory of corporate finance. Even though the discussions are very short, one has to admire the authors' ability to avoid complicated mathematics in discussing all of these theories without sacrificing clarity. The more mathematically-mature reader may perhaps be annoyed with the omission of mathematical formalism, but a natural question that might arise for such a reader is whether or not risk can indeed be put in a general axiomatic framework that will encompass all of its different manifestations, such as credit risk, operational risk, etc. Such a framework would allow a complete mathematical characterization of risk, and would allow various general and quantitative statements to be made about it.

Due to the extent of mortgage portfolios in the United States at the present time, and due to the sensitive dependence of their values on interest rates, the authors spend a fair amount of time discussing interest-rate risk and how to hedge it with derivatives. Thus they speak of the `sensitivity' of financial instruments to certain risk factors, and study the case of fixed-income products via the `DV01' risk measure, which is the change in value of a security after a change in interest rate of 1 basis point. This measure gives a `first-order' approximation to the change in yield, but the authors show how to obtain a `second-order' approximation using the `convexity' adjustment.

For complex portfolios, the most popular method for risk management has been the value-at-risk or VAR, and so it is not surprising that the authors devote an entire chapter to it in the book. The authors view it as a more sophisticated method because of its ability to deal with volatilities and correlations. However, they point out that its efficacy is restricted to relatively short time scales and under `normal' market conditions. The fiasco at LTCM (Long Term Capital Management) is discussed as an example of the failure of VAR to measure risk over long time scales and under abnormal market conditions. They do not however give any detailed evidence for this claim, but a perusal of the research literature (surprisingly rather slim) reveals that LTCM made "major" errors in terms of their risk management, if viewed from the standpoint of VAR. This still leaves open the question as to whether it made "major" errors from the standpoint of some other method for measuring and evaluating risk that is possibly radically different from VAR.

Accessible introduction, sometimes imprecise

This is a broad, gentle introduction to risk. As it means to be non-technical, it is stronger as a discussion of qualitative issues like governance and weaker as an introduction to deep topics like Basel II and value at risk (VaR).

What I like about this book

It succeeds in putting risk measurement in perspective, from 10,000 feet. Chapter 1 nicely summarizes why risk measures are helpful and "dangerous." In this respect, the authors actually go further than Taleb's Black Swan by hinting at solutions. Taleb basically says we necessarily abuse models (my paraphrase of his entire book). We can all stipulate to that. The relevant question is, knowing our risk models do not describe natural phenomena, what do we do about it: how do we improve them and, a different question, what is their proper use (e.g., support, situation, context)? It's hard to find good study on model risk but this book touches on it quite a bit. In a way, i think the book's strength is as a primer on model risk.

Chapter 4 is helpful on risk governance, including roles (risk advisory director). The credit crisis, like some before, has re-surfaced the importance of governance.

It is a very accessible scan of various risk topics. The authors boiled down their formidable research on risk adjusted return on capital (RAROC) into a quick review. Great intro to economic capital and OpRisk VaR. Basel II is summarized into the smallest space I've seen.

What I don't like

Bending over backwards to be non-technical can lead to confusion. The central limit theorem (CLT), being slightly misstated, is given too much application (i.e., it speaks to properties of a sample mean under unrealistic assumptions, generally not an obsession of the risk manager who is concerned with tail outcomes).

Value at risk (VaR) is divided into three approaches. That's typical, but the review of the "analytic approach" propagates a common misunderstanding: it implies that the distributional assumption must be normal (e.g., a drawback of analytic approach is "assumes normality"). But of course extensions to parametric (linear) VaR models, that address skew and/or heavy-tails, are available.

A fine hands-on supplement

I just finished reading this book cover to cover. I also read most of the reviews here.

First off, let me say that the points made by the 1 and 2 star reviews are correct. The style of the book is a little disorganized, the format is borderline awful, and it does look like something printed 20 years ago. The title might be misleading in that this is a very basic introduction to electronics book, and certainly not for Genius level anything.

After the first couple of chapters, all of the above negative points had me rather angry. Why I kept reading, I don't know, but I did, and I ended up being pleasantly surprised. This is the first book I've encountered that presented electronic components and concepts in an applied, hands-on manner. My background is in physics, so I've learned something about the theory of electronics, and have studied transistors and op amps, but never knew what the darn things were used to do. For me, this book helped me connect the dots to actually understand the application of principles.

I want to point out this books strong suit - it walks the reader through the design of the circuits presented, not just the final schematic. You can see the thought process that goes into choosing components, and how you add stages to a circuit to produce the overall desired result. For the beginner, this is critical. For example, I've seen many schematic diagrams that don't call out ground connections, or explain why certain parts of the circuit are wired to ground. To be able to design your own circuits, this is a critical piece of understanding. Advanced books assume you know it, and beginning books seem to assume you don't care.

Am I qualified to design any functional circuit for myself now? No. But I do feel like I have the understanding to play with some ICs, and figure out what kinds of stages need to be added to produce the gizmos I want. (Incidentally, my desire to learn electronics stems from my hobby of building backyard haunted houses, and wanting to have some automation and animatronics)

I was going to give this book 4 stars (was going to ding one star for the format), but after reading the others' criticisms, I find myself agreeing with their knocks on the book. Still, I have to say, having read several other books on electronics (including some of Horowitz and Hill) this was the book that finally lifted the veil for me and helped me understand the hows and whys of electronics - I plan on giving the book a thorough reread. So as a supplement to a text that give a little more theory, or for a practical hands-on first time exposure to electronics, I highly recommend this book to the beginning student or hobbyist.

Update (Dec. 2010) - I originally wrote this review over two years ago and I've been steadily learning more and more about electronics. I can honestly reaffirm that this book was the one that really got me over the curve to understanding how circuits are designed and why particular components are added. It does not stand alone as a complete reference on building circuits and making your own electronic gizmos, but as a practical, hands-on, "this is how you make a circuit" guide, I've yet to find better. This book has a valuable place on the road to making your own circuits to do whatever you dream of having them do.

Horribly written and illustrated

This book sounded ideal, a beginner's book with clear explanations and projects to illustrate the electronics concepts taught in each chapter. The introduction lauds Mr. Cutcher's skill as a teacher so highly I was really anticipating a wonderful tour through the basics of electronics.

Mr. Cutcher may indeed be a great teacher, but he is a very poor writer. His writing is disorganized and confusing, his instructions are unclear and sometimes incomplete, and he works so hard to fit everything into his "electric circuits are like water" analogy that he forces it when he should find a better way to describe it.

Lastly, many of the illustrations in this book are so atrocious that often the reader has no idea what they are supposed to represent. In this age there is no excuse for graphics that look like they were produced by a six-year-old on a Colecovision. I am astonished that this book was deemed ready for publication. Are there no editors in this segment?

I am very disappointed in this book. A good beginner's book is a wonderful thing to find, and this isn't it. I cannot recommend this book to anyone interested in learning electronics; it will be especially difficult for young people who don't have the focus to follow poorly-written or confusing material. I would especially worry that young people would not recognize the faults of the book and come away feeling that electronics is "too hard" for them because they couldn't follow Mr. Cutcher's explanations.

Very disappointed

I have read most of the books in this series and they all suffer from the same problems. They are full of errors that could have been corrected before release if the publisher hired a proofreader. This book is especially frustrating with poor graphics, charts, and tables. You can find some corrections to the text if you search the web. Do not purchase components from the source listed in the book (they are extremely overpriced).

Excellent Introduction Book

This is an excellent book for the hobbyist looking to get started with electronics or anyone who needs some clarification on some aspects of digital electronics. The book describes things clearly and in a simple manner so that the basics are easy to grasp, and then brings in the gory details required to fully understand it. This has usually been the failing point of the other books on the subject I have tried to read; they do not make the very basic concepts easy to understand. I will admit, most of the material in the first few chapters (Boolean logic, electronic components, etc.) was a review for me. Someone looking at this material for the first time may require a few read-throughs of this material. Don't get discouraged and have patience! Everything begins to come together in the later chapters, so don't worry if you don't completely understand everything the first time it is introduced.

An intriguing book...

I bought this book the other day, as I have often wondered exactly how boolean logic got instantiated in electronic devices, but couldn't seem to get past the first few pages of most intro texts. The author's style of writing is very engaging, and easy to follow. I was able to get through the first couple chapters sitting in the book store! I am looking forward to finishing the book, as it promises to provide me with a good grounding in this area. The biggest difference I saw in this book was the careful stepping from boolean logic at a simple level to more complex logic while simultaneously showing how it can work in circuit-form. Most books give the basics, then jump right into the circuit design as if you already get how to make the leap, (and I couldn't seem to get there on my own!!!)

Confusing with lots of typos

I bought this book at you do it electronics. I have an electronic mechanics background from when I was in the US air force. The book has what looks like a great organization, with 13 chapters, self tests on each chapter and a final exam at the end. The first chapter was pretty good but had a lot of either typos or printing mistakes that could have been prevented had the author proof read the pre production edition. The quiz at the end had a few mistakes in the answers but a proof read could have prevented them. The second chapter was very confusing with more typos. The sentence structure made it difficult to understand the concepts and the text constantly referred to diagrams or figures that were on other pages. The examples used to illustrate the concepts had mistakes in them which made them incomprehensible. The quiz at the end really frustrated me. I am so disappointed that I gave up trying to learn from this book.
