Solid medical dictionary

This is a solid medical dictionary that even has sections about folk and herbal remedies and cultural recommendations for folks from various backgrounds in the Spanish-speaking world. I highly recommend it, espcially as a companion to other online, disc-based or live Spanish instruction. The sections are well organized by medical discipline or symptoms and covers terms the medical or helping professional is most likely to run across.

I like this book because it'll really give you an idea how spanish language is constructed plus the exercises after each topic which appears to be too elementary but very helpful, indeed. Good price for a sensible book. If you're a beginner in the heathcare world, this is it! Eureka!

McGraw-Hill's Complete Medical Spanish

Although this book is not bad, it only gives you the basic information needed to get through a physical exam of a patient, and does not come with pronunciation of the words. I would recommend buying the 'Spanish for Family Practitioners' set that includes this book and a set of 3 CD's. The CD's provide dialogs and pronunciation.

I am very disappointed in this book. I was looking for leadership games to share with my management class. Of the 50 games listed, only about 10 deal directly with leadership skills and traits. The rest are general ice-breakers, productivity boosters, and team-building games. And, in my opinion, none of the games are worth more than what you can find for free on the internet. For instance, one game encourages you to develop a slide presentation of photos and ask your group about first impressions of people. It is a good idea for a quick game but the book doesn't provide any photos. It took about 45 minutes to read the entire 160 page book. So, if you can pick up a used copy of this book for a couple of bucks, you may find a few useful ideas that you can adapt to your own work.

If you're searching for a book of group games that are productive and fun, then search no further. This book has a wide variety of exercises to meet almost any meeting goal.

I used several of the exercises in this book to facilitate a strategic planning session. The result was a productive and fun meeting in which the organization was engaged, producing a plan that was able to move the group towards greater success.

The book is well organized making it easy to find games which fit with the goals I was trying to achieve. The instructions were clear and complete. There are tips for maximizing the use of the games, also. I'll be using this book, often.

Some really good ideas here

I bought this book for use with my high school band leadership camp. There are some great team building activities in here and it also includes some worksheets to copy and hand out. It is certainly not all-inclusive, but it is a great start when looking for activities to motivate a group of people who need to work together to work towards a common goal.

This Book Is Worth The Money

Warren Brusee gets right into the thick of Six Sigma from the very beginning. The author discusses shortcuts and simpler methods than traditional Six Sigma processes that are equally as effective.

Statistics and Quantitative Methods have never been particularly friends of mine. This book is approachable, reads well, has very clear examples, and sample problems.

Highly recommended!!

Brussee's Statistics for Six Sigma Made Easy is a wonderful "how to" text for six sigma stat tools that is very readable, and usable, by anyone with at least a high school level background in mathematics. He has done a great job of simplifying much of what a Green Belt would use from the Six Sigma toolkit, and he presents the material in a format highly conducive to application. The result is a valuable statistics manual for the Six Sigma implementer.

6S no, process improvement yes.

On a whole not worth the $14 I paid. Your better bet is to get this book from a library and read it over a weekend. Looking at the manner in which the tools are simplified, I believe the methods dilute the overall value of a tool on a formal 6S project. If you are looking for the 99.999+% solution for a 50k+ problem you can not afford to risk using a lower accuracy tool.

BUT..If you are looking for a process improvement tool that is in the success rate of a Kaizan event, (more on the 80-90% success rate) the simplified version of the tools make sense. In point of fact this book could drive toward a wider use of more valid statistical tools in a production/operations environment.

I did like the step by step walk through probability that gives a validation of the why behind many of the 6S tools. I also liked the manner in which the book presented the exercises with the answers to assure reader understanding and correct use in excel. The other value in this book is that all the tools presented are producible utilizing MS excel which most people in a business environment have vs. a 1K+ purchase of Minitab or SPSS.

Many sound elements, but also grave concerns.

Being the father of a grade 2 boy, this book was of significant interest to me. My son is more fearful than intrepid, and the descriptions of "courage lesson" sounded like just what we needed.

After finishing this book, I came away with several useful notions, but also with some very grave concerns. Normally, I don't bother reviewing books, but this one motivated me to do so. I want other parents to know what they are getting into with this book.

First, the positive elements. This book does an excellent job of enabling parents to help kids overcome fear, and to react quickly in an emergency. It teaches a simplified version of autogenic or circular breathing, also known as "tactical breathing" that is a proven method of overcoming adrenaline induced stress response, and is taught to military and law enforcement personnel. It provides many ways of building courage in everyday activities. This book also does an excellent job of stressing the importance of a vocal response to aggression, both as a means of unlocking a potential "freeze" response and channeling aggression towards the attacker. The book presents a simplified colour code of situational awareness, and of mental state during a defence situation.

Where this book causes me great concern is the insistence on teaching young / smaller children to use a potentially fatal technique to disable attackers (throat strikes to crush/collapse the larynx). I have no sympathy for child molesters, and, frankly, hearing that a 9-yr old had killed a man who was trying to stuff him into a van would cause me great rejoicing. I totally agree with the author's tactical reasoning for advocating this method: a child needs to overcome a huge body size disparity, and needs a simple, easy technique that can reliably incapacitate a much bigger person. But frankly, and I speak as a gun owner and shooter here, to me this is like getting your 10-yr old his own pistol and carry permit. I don't think that even an adolescent has the impulse control to not use this technique if they get really arenalized during a schoolyard dust-up. Teaching a lethal technique is to me the same as trusting them with a lethal weapon. And one that cannot be taken away afterwards. I'm not an expert, but based on some courses I have attended, I would rather teach a child to strike / poke / gouge eyes instead. Even having a grain of sand in your eye can be incapacitating. And it's not fatal. Parents who buy this book must make this decision before they start implementing the lessons, and be aware of potential implications.

The second major reservation I have with this book is that they teach children, when threatened with a knife, to grab the blade with their hands. This is, in the opinion of all my defencive and martial arts instructors, a huge mistake. It does little in deflecting blows, and can cause injuries that can result in permanent loss of dexterity in the hand. It is far better to sustain cuts to the back of the hand or forearm than to the palm or inside of the wrist, where bigger blood vessels run. I have been told by some seriously lethally trained instructors that they would themselves try at all costs to flee from a knife wielding attacker. This book does children a big harm by suggesting they try to grab a knife.

The reason I gave this book three stars it that I would still, with the two above major reservations, recommend it to parents, but ONLY on the understanding that parents must, knowingly, from an informed perspective, decide what parts of it they will teach their children.

Well-rounded, encouraging, readable

How do you prepare a child for the danger of daily living and still raise a confident human being? You read this book. I thought I'd read everything available on self-defense for children so I was stunned to stumble across this treasure. Most books have a good tip or two in them but few are practical, and some are downright dangerous. This is the first I've found that offers a parent a complete process for raising a strong and safe child.
This book won't give you statistics or the details of predator psychology - vital information for parents - but you can read up on those separately. Meanwhile, don't skip the small stuff. There are powerful messages tucked into single paragraphs in this book. I disagree with the author in only one area - the need for long-term physical self-defense instruction - but understand his concern because of the lack of practical application to real-world scenarios in most martial arts schools. Real self-defense schools are difficult to find... so read this book! I recommend this for parents of children ages 3 to 16.

Also recommended: 'Child Lures' by Kenneth Wooden. 'Protecting the Gift' by Gavin de Becker. 'Raising Safe Kids in an Unsafe World' by Jan Wagner. "Gun-proof Your Children" by Ayoob.

If You Love Your Children, You Will Read Gardners' Book

Debbie and Mike Gardner have written an absolute "must read" for parents. "Raising Kids Who Can Protect Themselves" is the best parenting book I've read in recent years. A fascinating page-turner, the Gardners' book is written in a simple-to-follow format filled from cover to cover with life-saving instruction. It doesn't matter if your children are toddlers or teens; this is a book worth much more than its purchase price. I have been recommending "Raising Kids Who Can Protect Themselves" to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. In fact, I plan to give copies as Christmas gifts! L.C. About the Author
Joseph E. Shigley (deceased) was Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan, Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, received the Worcester Reed Warner medal in 1977 and their Machine Design Award in 1985. He was the author of eight books, including Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (with John J. Uicker, Jr.), and Applied Mechanics of Materials and Coeditor-in-Chief of the Standard Handbook of Machine Design.

Charles R. Mischke, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. He has authored many technical papers on designing to a reliability specification, computer-aided design, and design morphology. His was Coeditor-in-Chief, with J.E. Shigley, of the Standard Handbook of Machine Design, First and Second Editions.

Thomas Hunter Brown, Jr., Ph.D., PE, is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina State University. He currently manages both the FE review program and the Civil Engineering PE Review Program at the University's Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE), in addition to fulfilling his course development and teaching responsibilities. Brown also teaches review courses for the Mechanical Engineering PE Review Program offered by the University and a private professional development firm. Prior to coming to NC State, Dr. Brown worked as a mechanical engineer for Scientific-Atlanta, Inc., Fluor Daniel Construction, and Burlington Industries, where he specialized in stress analysis and machine design.

thorough and outdated

I own both Shigley's books on Machine Design, Mechanical Engineering Design (which I would rate 5/5) and this handbook. I find this handbook is very extensive in the topics it covers, just about everything pertaining to Machine Design, but fails to elaborate in many of the key areas. Furthermore, many formulas are presented, but there are not enough examples on their use. My greatest complaint though, has to do with the print, it seems as if I had in my hand a book written out in the 60s. Drawing are dirty and unclear in many situations, tables seem as if they were cutout from another book and pasted here, then photocopied (the first drawing in the book, a man, seems as if it was photocopied on a lousy photocopier from an old newspaper), and the typeface in the graphs is plainly outdated. I understand late J. Shigley is no longer among us, but Mischke should modernize the quality of presentation when deciding to launch new editions. Overall, I recommend Rothbart's handbook over this one.

Excerpt: This Third Edition of the Standard Handbook of Machine Design has been completely reorganized as compared to its two previous editions. To bring into focus the needs of the machine design engineer, without the distractions of ancillary material, the number of chapters has been reduced from 50 in the Second Edition to 39. These 39 chapters have been carefully grouped into nine distinct sections, denoted as Parts 1 through 9. These chapter groupings were inspired primarily by a set of eight "Machine Design Workbooks," containing much of the material in the First Edition, and published between the First and Second Editions.

After a new introductory chapter, "Evolution of a Successful Design," the first of nine sections, Part 1, "Machine Elements in Motion," presents four chapters on the seemingly endless ways to achieve a desired motion. Kinematics, or the geometry of motion, is probably the most important step in the design process, as it sets the stage for many of the other decisions that will be made as a successful design evolves. Whether it's a self-locking latch you are looking for, a complex cam shape, or an entire gear assembly, the information you need is here in these chapters.

Part 2, "Machine Elements that Absorb and Store Energy," contains three chapters presenting the classic machine elements: springs, flywheels, clutches, and brakes. Not all designs will have a need for these energy-related devices, but, when appropriate, no other device will do the job.

Part 3, "Gearing," contains five chapters covering every possible gear type, from basic spur gears to complex hypoid bevel gears sets; the intricacies of worm gearing; and the very versatile and relatively modern power screw designs.

Part 4, "Power Transmission," contains four chapters directed at the requirements of transferring motion from one rotating axis to another, whether by time-honored belt or chain configurations, or the wide variety of couplings used to isolate and protect downstream machine elements. This is also where the design of shafts, from both a static and dynamic viewpoint, is included.

Part 5, "Bearings and Lubrication," pulls together in one place the design of many types of roller bearings as well as the design aspects of the classic journal bearing. Bearings could not do their job without lubrication, and lubrication would be lost from most bearings without the proper seals. Traditional and nontraditional designs are presented.

Part 6, "Fastening, Joining, and Connecting," covers every conceivable type of mechanical fastener. When disassembly is not required, or when maximum strength is needed, then the only solution is a welded connection. All aspects of a welded connection are presented. Many connections must prevent leakage or provide cushioning, so a discussion of seals and their effect on a bolted connection is provided. Lastly, Part 9, "Classical Stress and Deformation Analysis," provides the design engineer with the fundamental formulas for stress, deflection, and deformation, and includes special geometries such as curved elements and special loadings, which are found in cylinders under internal pressure when parts are press fitted.

One of the chapters included in the First and Second Editions, "Sections and Shapes-Tabular Data," has been provided in this Third Edition as an appendix.

Very helpful.

I got this to help me through a very badly-instructed Internet business calculus course for college requirement. My course was basically a shortened version of this book. I doubt that I would have gotten such a good grade without this book. It is not perfect and there were still some spots that I got stuck on for a bit..but overall this was a very helpful book. Between this book and some youtube tutorials I probably fishy need to take the course to learn business calculus.

I was taking Calculus for Business and Economics as part of my Information Systems degree. The textbook for the class was pretty terrible, so I purchased a few different books from Amazon to present the content in different ways to help me understand. I ended up with an A in the class, so I'm sure this book helped.

A Nice Find

I was taking business calculus and had a difficult time grasping it. I also had a difficult time and getting someone to help me with it because it is a business based calculus, the tutors who new calculus did not quite understand the business applications of it. This book pretty much went in the same order as my text book did but explained it much better. Definately would recomend to those who must take business calculus.

I would give it more than 5 stars if they recorded all the sections on the CD!

The non-CD version of this book is quite popular in the non-CD version and similar in cost. The stories are interesting and it moves along quickly. However, the CD is a HUGE value add with native speakers. Be warned, however, that only two sections of the book are included on the CD. I wrote to the publisher about this and apparently they went to market without feeling a need to have ALL the sections recorded. I wasn't impressed with their answer, however, I'm still quite impressed with the book as an excellent, inexpensive French resource. The stories are memorable, they help you remember the vocabulary and there is just enough annotation, repetition, etc. If they get the third section recorded someday... I would give it a 5.0+ rating. (One caveat... you may not want to tackle this one without some help because it does move quickly. If you are up for a challenge, you will learn a lot and with a road map such as French Verbs & Essentials of Grammar, 2E (Verbs and Essentials of Grammar Series) the trip will be much easier and enjoyable. Another must have that I recommend highly is Pronounce It Perfectly in French with Audio CDs (Pronounce It Perfectly CD Packages).

Lover of the French Language

I gave this book three stars,because it is not really for true beginners with zero background in the language. I have been studying the French language on and off for 3-4 years.It is an excellent book for someone like myself who has some background in the French language. It helps either to reinforce what you already know and helps to advance your grammer, reading, and comprehension skills.The stories are short and simple. Each story emphasizes on key words that are located in the margin of the page. There is a vocabulary section, simple crossword puzzles, and lessons after each story. It, also, has an answer key to check your answers.The book keeps everything short and sweet as not to bore or lose the learner.However, I feel that a true beginner may require supplemental material to help him/her understand some of the material in the book.

For even the weariest of language learners

I personally have about as much luck mastering languages as I would have trying to single-handedly launch a space shuttle. And I know that I'm not the only one, so, fortunately for those of us who are challenged, this little book exists.

I picked it up and was reading French. Better yet, I was understanding it. It really gets you into the language and then subtly challenges you to stretch your comprehension.

I would like a better grounding in grammar, but the fact that this book doesn't provide an intense explanation of grammar shouldn't count against it. That's simply not the purpose of the book.

If you want to learn to read French and feel like you're actually getting somewhere, get this book!

The book almost perfectly addresses a wide array of issues, actually, it's phenomenal! It simply is a 'construction operations manual.' I have not read anything that would come close to this book in terms of running a practical construction company.

Furthermore, this is basic business development. In my opinion it is a balanced and structured way of creating and operating any business in general. Whether it be a construction, technology or scuba diving companies, these basic functional principles of running a business will not change. It is a fabulous book.

There is some room for improvement. The cd-rom with forms templates is fairly large and it forms facilitates many issues, however I personally have put together a compilation of templates 4x as large. Therefore, there is a way to create a better manual by adding more forms to the cd-rom.

Overall, i give the Construction Operations Manual two thumbs up, five stars and lots of support.

Good but could be better

Author has huge experience in construction industry, but I expected something like a guideline - simple in structure, focused on essence. Topics are covered with plenty of words, could be simpler. However generally it is worth having this book.
