Fantastic for Read-Aloud Guide
By Gina Lytton Gay
As a proud parent of a 6 year old and 3 year old, I am constantly looking for relevant reading lists that will promote a prolific Read-Aloud experience for our daughter at home. "Literature for Lively Lessons" combines opportunities from calendar events (ie. seasons, holidays, author birthdays) and weekly themes with curriculum subject connections (predominately social studies, geography, science, and language arts). We are entering our third month of using this guide on a weekly basis for selecting picture books. Out of 20 suggested books, we generally select 5-7. So far I have only been disappointed with one recommended book. Overall, this is a resource that will be relevant to our family read-aloud experience every week at least for the next 4-5 years!

Great resource for parents Pre K - 2nd grade.
By rjhamma1
After wondering how to start teaching my preschooler more in depth material than just alphabet and numbers,I began looking for a book to guide me in the right direction. This book is the one I've chosen to use. It is a weekly-themed list of picture books for the entire year. The book is easily organized into themes such as: Alaska, weather, poetry, friends, grandparents, butterflies, different cultures, etc. It also includes teaching strategies and interesting holidays. Each Sunday we make a trip to the library and get the books for the upcomming week. This book helped me to organize lessons by weekly themes, which then gives me a starting place to also add crafts and local activites. Great ideas for kids of all ages.

Excellent resource on choosing picture books to spice up reading & lessons
By Z Hayes
"Literature for Lively Lessons" is a great educational resource for teachers and parents. It is well-organized and filled with handy tips for picking appropriate reading material for various themes. It is presented in a calendar format - going through the 12 months of the year and also focuses on the holidays/ special commemorations for each of those months, e.g. February touches on Black History and Friendship etc. But apart from that, each month is also devoted to other subjects of general interest, e.g. in March, week one focuses on 'Pigs', week two focuses on weather, Week three focuses on magical people, and Week four on Caldecott Award Winners.
There are hundreds of reading recommendations for each topic and for every week of the year. At the end of each month, we are given reading strategies to be incorporated into our lessons with helpful hints. There are also extensive indexes of books by author, title and subject.
All in all, this is a well-compiled book that takes off the pressure in having to hunt for suitable books dealing with various issues and themes for children Pre-K through 3rd grade. I have a four-year-old daughter, and each week, I look up the recommended titles in this book and off we go to the library to check them out [I do it online as it saves me time hunting through the bookstacks]. It has proven to be very rewarding thus far and we've found the variety of books to be very stimulating. Highly recommended!
