Worked really well for me
By Amazon Customer
I bought this book (and a bunch of others) because I wanted to prepare myself for a college math assessment test and score high enough that I could jump straight into statistics (I know, pretty ambitious!).

My current situation?

1) I haven't studied algebra (or any math at all for that matter!) in about 20 years

2) I didn't learn math in English

So, after opening the first algebra book and realizing I didn't remember how to do even more basic operations, like dividing large numbers by large numbers, I decided I needed to get something that went even further back.

I bought about 10 books, thinking that it was a good investment, as skipping the basic math classes at about $300, plus the cost of books, for each, would save me quite a bit of money.

After reading about 40 pages of the first basic math book, I was very disappointed. It was unclear, complicated and just didn't make much sense to me. I started to wonder if things had changed THAT much since I used to study. I put the book aside and pulled this one from the pile. Well, it has 12 chapters and I have completed 8 so far. The book is great! I read some bad reviews and, who knows, maybe chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12 are rubbish... But I doubt it!

The approach is logical, practical and easy to follow. There are quite a few exercises and tests at the end of each chapter, as well as a complete test at the end of the book. I usually complete a couple of chapters, then take all the chapter-end tests from the previous chapters again before proceeding. This way, the information stays fresh in my mind.

I liked this book so much that I bought about 4 or 5 more books from the DeMystified collection, including Algebra and Math Word Problems (the latter by the same author). Ok, so maybe I buy books compulsively at times, but I am very excited about math, probably for the first time in my life.

If you need to take a refresher course, or if you need support for classes you are taking, I truly recommend this book!

Good luck!

Good but confusing at some points
By S. Brown
This book does exactly what it says it will do, right up to chapter 11. For some reason, the author seemed to be in a hurry and deviated from the normal "step by step" approach used in previous chapters.

I understood everything from page 1 to the bottom of page 211. At the top of page 212 there are 5 practice questions that left me in the dark. No explanation as to what the author wants and the answers add to the confusion.

Here is an example of how easily it is to become confused.

The author walks you through graphing lines.

Page 211:

Draw the graph of 2x-y=8

Find the coordinates of two points on the line:

Let x= 1

2x-y=8

2(1)-y=8

2-y=8

2-2-y=8-2

-y=6

-y/-1 = 6/-1

y=6

(1,6)

I understand how to do this, and the author goes on to show how to graph 2x-y=8 when x=1 and x=5

Page 212:

Draw the graph of each of the following:

1.

2.

3.

4. 3x-y=6.

5.

Up until this point the author gives you the value of x for you to solve his examples and how this looks on a graph. Suddenly at practice time you are not given the value for x and you are suppose to graph a line. I am just learning how to work this type of problem. Am I suppose to substitute my own value for x? A little input would have been helpful here. The answers that are given, if I am to give my own value for x, my lines will be different than the lines the author shows? Is this right?

I cannot count how many times I had to go back and re-read previous pages in chapter 11 to try and read the authors mind.

I am now trying to take the chapter 11 quiz.

Question 6. The line whose equation is 2x+3y=6 is:

(a) line l

(b) line m

(c) line n

(d) line o

I have read and re-read this chapter and gone over the previous examples. I have tried to find an answer on the internet. Am I suppose to use my own substitute values for x? If so, wouldn't the line be different from the authors answer? I have no idea because I don't know what values the author used versus mine. I don't like to reverse engineer answers. As if you could reverse engineer lines on a graph.

I take a pre-college test in 10 days. I can only hope they do not ask me to choose the "line whose equation is x-2y=4".

I found multiple errors in this book
By Jason Looney
This book really is a good refresher, and I liked up until I found a few answers he had given, which were wrong. I was so confused by the answers, I had two math teachers validate that they were most definately wrong. The wordage in some areas is a little obscure aswell. Another thing I found about this book I didn't like was that he does'nt give enough exercises; that is, he doesn't give the appropriate kinds of exercises in certain chapters. I was doing a problem and thought to myself "perhaps I can switch this problem around in my own way, and see what I got" I came up with a strange instance where he had not given an example on how to get around such a problem. So I had to ask my Math advisor at school. In the fractions part, he chooses to skip altogether on "How to convert repeating decimals into fractions" saying "Changing a repeating decimal to a fraction requires a more complex procedure, and this procedure is beyond the scope of this book" yet I looked the procedure up, and it really is a pretty quick explanation.

The book is definately a quick refresher type, but this can pose a problems for those of you who wish to get an elaborate run through on each exercise, because some exercises miss important examples.

For the most part, its worth the buy to get yourself off the ground, and be able to refresh. It may get you a little pissed at times, but the errors are learning tools within themselves considering he may have put them there deliberately.

This isn't a book for those of you who want a elaborate explanation/examples for pre-algebra, but for those who just want to get on with it, and dont really care for math in an elaborate sense, it's definately a book worth buying!
