OK for Certain Crowds

"Careers in Finance" offers a broad overview of the four main areas in finance: investments, corporate finance, trading, and insurance. It lists career opportunities for each of these categories and tries to examine the nature of work, qualifications, income, and growth potential for each type of job. While the author did a thorough job investigating the field, here are a couple of areas to be cautious about:
CONS:
(1) The book was published in 2004 and was not updated since.
As a result, the growth prospects for each of the jobs listed are out of date since they only cover the expected trends up until 2010.
(2) The income figures represent national medians/means, where they should be region/state-specific.
Consequently, the income information is pretty meaningless - i.e. the $35,000 median salary of the life insurance broker really doesn't tell me much. By California standards, that would be at the poverty line.
(3) The author herself is not a practitioner in the field, but rather a journalist.
At times the book reads a little odd, as it contains wording that is not typical to the world of business/finance.
I would definitely recommend this book to someone considering getting a degree in finance and wanting to learn what they can do with it after they graduate. It think it is a good starting point to learn more about the field. If you already have a finance degree and know which area you want to specialize in, you will probably find the book lacking in detail.

This will be useful in helping anyone who is exploring careers in Finance. The sample resumes in the back are also a nice plus that push this beyond a simple reference volume.

This book is a good resource, though not as comprehensive as I would have liked. Its a good intro to the field.
